Topic Author's Original Post - Oct 2, 2014 - 06:17pm PT
i've always wished this forum had a "Best of SuperTopo" stickied at the top...

to add your favourite hidden and not so hidden climbing related SuperTopo gems to the compilation below, just post the thread, tr, or single post that made a significant impression on you, to this thread and i'll keep compiling and making them clickable here, on the first post...

two rules: no self-authored nominations and as this is a climbing hall of fame the nominations need to be somewhat climbing related.

two instructions: be specific regarding which threads or posts you deem worthy [ie. i need something more specific than "all of jimmy joe willicker's threads"] and ask yourself whether it's just a personal fave or whether it rises to the level that this list generally rises to, thus far.

thanks to all that have contributed both the original content and the suggestions, so far... [especially to Mick K and mike m for starting their SuperTaco Climbing Hall of Fame and Best Supertopo posts threads that this was initially primarily compiled from]

those two pate threads are ridiculous... i'd seen the one on grossman, but not the other...

added both of them and a bunch of obvious ones from them... [steve grossman's latok 1, robin barley, murder of the impossible and johnny rock threads; survival's paul preuss thread and donini and haan's basketcase stories; mighty hiker's tis-sa-ack; mark hudon's nose in a day tr, Fritz's royal robbins thread, Roger Breedlove's Ray Jardine thread; and put the wings of steel and steve grossman's history threads into their own series categories]

but i only added the ones that i know to be no brainers, as i'm not interested in this becoming nah000's hall of fame... so keep 'em coming people... i know this is but a trifling start...

there's gold to be mined in these piles of troll dung... hahaha.

Good idea. I appreciate your commitment to keeping the OP updated as people add ideas for their favorite threads. This will be a great resource for new people joining the Forum.

Here is my nomination for one of my favorite threads. It it climbing related and highlights one of the best aspects of the Forum - the wit and humor of climbers, combined with great writing. This thread was DRLJefe's spoof on the controversy a couple of years ago surrounding the Compressor route done "by fair means".

RyanD: you da man... added all of your suggestions... most of the fun in doing this is seeing so much i either wasn't around here for or have missed... half of these i'd never seen before and i think i spend too much time on this joint. ha!

i also agree with your comment about post deletion. the more i look at these old threads the more i'm convinced that a person shouldn't be able to delete their old thread contributions after the same two week or whatever period it is that they are able to edit them during... they should however be able to take their name off them indefinitely... that way they wouldn't have to be associated with the post, but a person could still follow the conversation when looking at old threads... regarding this age old debate i'm of the opinion that contributions to a conversation [in this case threads] become "owned" by those having the conversation... trip reports on the other hand should remain in the ownership of the original poster... if people want to take their toys and go home they should be able to take their trip reports... their thread postings should remain community property at the same time that a poster should have the ability to take their name off of them. [obviously this all imesho]

phylp: great suggestion. i hadn't seen that one before. but it reminded me of drljefe's recent tr in tribute to his sister, which i also included. both of these, while engaging to different points along the emotional spectrum are what makes this place great... thanks for your addition!

housekeeping: while it's only two threads long i added a squamish category to the serial threads list and added Big Mike's squamish thread to it... given that, to date, Big Mike's thread is the size of 80 "long" threads and has some real gold within it, it only made sense to consider them serial threads even if there are only "two" of them.

also in working through some of this I came upon DMT's the great enduring non-acrimonious thread list... while a lot of that is ot, a lot of it has good climbing content so i included it in the list compilation...

thanks everyone... keep 'em coming.

Moose: if you think you feel hurt, think of all the others who feel even more hurt and unloved than you do...

did your mother ever tell you to eat your brussels sprouts, because starving ethiopians would love to have brussels sprouts?

this is kind of like that... that's why you need to tell us what your favourite non-Moose started climbing thread is... while it's easier to tell me your favourite moosedrool thread, if you don't eat your brussels sprouts everyone ends up feeling hurt and unloved...

please call 1-800-ST-HALL-OF-FAME [don't worry it's an international number] now as operators are standing by waiting to give recognition to a hurt and neglected st contributor...

please, don't wait another moment...

this just in: mistaken copy pasta? or have we already gone meta?

Marlow: thanks for the boots... and more importantly some great non-US focused additions! added 'em.

RyanD: nobody can make too many nominations as long as they keep finding gold. you are the miner in chief: i just put 'em in the window. thanks for another great batch!

these pictures from the boa roof thread are supersick and supersweet, respectively!

I am honored to have my little Squamish thread included in your list. I more than a few favorites, but they currently escape me. Once i get home i would be happy to dig up some more gold.

I remembered one. Any op by JB is instant gold...

Well, guess what?

I got a few more.

Is there a minimum # of posts a thread should have to be hall of fame? Or are we just recognizing quality climbing content that we are lucky enough to wallow in a massive, chaotic archive of??

Either way, this thread is going to make rainy season so much better.

These two thread/TRs are kinda the same story but written from different perspectives. Some of the greatest writing- so funny.

I would say any of these 65 Trip Reports would have to be included.
http://www.supertopo.com/inc/view_tripreports.php?dcid=Pj44PTU-OSI,

Pellucid is a gem here.
If I had to pick one it would be his Mithral Dihedral report.

Big Mike: gold for sure! added.

RyanD: quantity is meaningless in my book. some long threads are sh#t and some very short threads completely deserve to be on here...

the way i've been thinking about what should be on here is the following: if someone who didn't waste as much [or any] time on here as we obviously do [haha], came along, what would be the current and historical information, humorous and serious conversation and story, etc. and etc. that i/we would suggest they take a look at to represent the best of what this place has to offer regarding climbing related information/entertainment.

but what do you [and anyone else interested in this little attempt at chaos mining] think the criteria for a supertopo hall of fame should be?

for the time being there is so much that hasn't been mentioned that i think it's better to accept the chaos, cast a wide net to begin with and have people who are interested suggest what makes sense to them. once we start to reach the end of the mining seams [or maybe when we are bored in the winter] we can begin to nail down what a criteria for inclusion should be and therefore what should or should not be on here. if a bit of fools gold sneaks its way on here we can always sort that out later.

added your suggestions.

this just in: for sure. i added both a link to the whole list as well as the half dome like you haven't seen it, teton grand slam, geochronology wall and the mithral dihedral tr that you suggested.

mining: i went through the best of tr threads from 2011, 12 and 13 and added most of the tr's that were suggested multiple times and weren't already on the list. this included:

jim herson: half dome with my daughter
damn this looks high: half dome cables with an autistic boy
hudon: zenyatta mondatta solo
tahoe 523: a laywoman's account of a not too soggy siege on salathe and niad in 3 days and 2 nights

the individual post section needs a little action, so i added, to the first post in this thread, a few that have stood out to me over the years:

Jim Brennan's The Higher we Got, The Freer We Became.

madbolter1's How did I feel about the WoS Route itself?

and while it verges on OT The Fist's Lost Friend is just too good to pass over

finally, L's Peter Croft saved me from terminal boredom was nominated in the 2008 best post thread

in some fall cleaning, i moved james' and wbraun's entries from the thread section to the single post section...

James: The Trip's Not Over: A Chongo Update [Dec. 3, 2007]

WBraun + elcap-pics: ElCap Report "Pics Fall 07" [Oct. 29, 2007]

RyanD: nice work as usual! sorted 'em, categorized 'em, added 'em... my favorite of these, that i hadn't seen before, was the muir thread. and way to milk the slab threads... who knew... so sweet...

nature: that chicken is the second most referenced man-made inanimate object [that i can think of] on this board... hahaha. [for anyobdy who's new, the most referenced has to be blue and in the shape of a "christmas tree" hahaha]

in the housekeeping department i cross referenced the big kahuna threads back to the main list organized by subject. also added a canadian rockies section that includes grossman's north twin and avery's mt. alberta threads...

while the tr and serial sections are rounding out nicely, the main thread and single post sections have lots of gaps that need filling... so, keep 'em coming!..

received a list, from guido, of a bunch of his threads and tr's. while the german side of me doth not like the breaking of rules, the lover of gold can't resist! i listed all of his climbing related threads and tr's above [as well as the build a boat thread which again is too good not to bend a few rules] and then linked them from the first page...

i also nominated the first eight [edit: now nine], as listed above, for the first post as they are clearly gold... if anybody feels that there are others that should be included [same for grossman's threads...] feel free to pipe up.

thanks so much for the original posts and for forwarding the compilation guido! now you owe me a non-guido initiated nomination! ha!

So much fantastic climbing content buried on this forum!

nah000- Thanks for indexing a bunch of it!

I really need to go all the way back and do a proper job of listing the many threads that I have started. Almost 4000 scanned article pages and images in my account posted here so far...

thanks Pc, zB, SG, SS, Av and tji!

and especially to RyanD... without your stoke and gold mining, this thread likely would have died shortly after inception... and thanks for another good batch... i added 'em all except the manips thread... [while it's arguable for sure, i feel like it's very slightly a bridge too far from the "climbing" theme... that said if more people want it i'm open to being overruled...]

guido also sent another sweet one. there is a shot of kor in there that is gold in and of itself... i added it both to his compilation post above and to the tr section of the first post...

The Southern Yosemite thread. So many good pics and stories. Also has the drama and ethics. Used to be a regular thread, but the negativity seemed to leave a bad taste on most of us who contributed to it. I was definitely apart of the negativity.....oops.

c_o_i: yeah, this thread is how i procrastinate as well... ha!

RA: saw your post before you deleted it... your tahoe thread is sweet... thanks to RyanD for upholding rules of order and procedure... but i have to admit i have a list of threads to add on the computer that crashed, and the tahoe thread was already on that list... so while i'm sure it's as shocking for you as it is for me, but there is hope for the world, as at least we can agree on climbing gold, Mr. Anderson... ha!

tji: i'd never clicked on the southern yosemite thread, before. not sure how i missed it, all these years. and for sure, not only does quality trump quantity, but usually quantity just ends up producing more of a mixed bag. some of the highest quality threads are the shortest because they don't have a chance to get infected... haha. nice additions. thanks.

ß Î Ø T Ç H: nice.

RyanD: had the walleye story in the single post section, but added it to a dave schultz entry as well, as there are a lot of good photos of him in that one... also had the birth of wheat thin... added the other four. another gem from Ron Anderson... who knew?

LongAgo: excellent idea. pulled out tarbuster's thread and also added a grossman thread about Beverly Johnson in order to create a "the ladies, the ladies..." section. agreed: the sacherer thread is one of the best, and was also one of the og's to the first post... thanks for the nominations!

Reilly: what am i going to do with you guys? two rules, i tell ya... two rules! haha. oh well, it's gold so i'll hurdle the procedural requirement and nominate it myself... included it as a tr... the addendum is where the real heart of that post is at. thanks for both the op and the contribution!

guido: added a couple to guido's posts a page back: The Day I Almost Drowned Royal Robbins
[make sure you read that one closely...] and Sorcerer's Apprentice-Nose route 40 years ago... also added the dick erb thread he nominated The day I could have killed Royal Robbins and added it to the Royal Robbins section.

housekeeping: bumped the kahuna threads down, so they aren't right at the top.

super sweet! nice to see some new contributors join up with the tried and true...

ok. this is the thread mining equivalent to walking along a stream and looking down for gold:

here are a few that have been on the front page lately and, imo, deserve to be on the first post:

i posted a bunch of roadie's stories to the single post category:
Alaska Highway, free solo, TR [Roadie: Dec. 16, 2012]
Indian Creek- a short story [Roadie: Dec. 16, 2012]
Lynn Hills Underwear [Roadie: Dec. 23, 2012]
Beggars Buttress tr [Roadie: Dec. 6, 2014]

rounded out the WOS threads with a couple of the more recent ones...
WoS "confessions"--The whole truth about the "enhancements" [madbolter1: Sep. 20, 2009]
The 4 people who climbed Wings of Steel talk (Video) [The Wolf: Nov. 19, 2014]

yablonski, tobin, and mccray threads:
Yabo [Chicken Skinner: Jul. 2, 2006]
Brian McCray [ElCapPirate: Aug. 25, 2014]
Losing Tobin, Thirty Four Years Ago [Bushman: Oct. 5, 2014]

and a couple of excellent gear threads:

johntp: for sure... there are a bunch of jello and tarbuster's threads on there, but i'm sure there are lots more of those guys' gems remaining to be unearthed. but Pat Ament threads are a glaring omission for sure. got any favorites you'd like to recommend?

tji: sweet additions. fitting that someone who takes great photos would appreciate someone who takes great photos... added 'em.

there's been a lot of great new and old content popping up on the first page lately... so no digging was required to find the following gold:

interesting stories about interesting people:
Seeking Memories of Jim Baldwin [Mighty Walker: Dec. 18, 2009]

replaced the macnamara thread about the same Fowler interview with the original:

aight... i posted what should be all of Steve Grossman's climbing related threads above.

been plugging away on this one for a while... it'll be another while before the first half are all sorted and posted to the first post of this thread. but in the mean time i figured i'd get all of these out there and in one place...

thanks for all of your work SG! the trove of information you have scanned and posted to ST and the conversations that have resulted from your op's are truly fantastic.

the mother lode of golden historical climbing content on ST to be sure...

finally i started The Steve Grossman Historical Thread Omnibus so that i can keep adding steve's posts to one place. a lot of what i didn't consider quite "golden" enough for the first post of this thread, are at this point only waiting for a few people to come out of the woodwork and add their first hand stories...

thanks for the suggestions HV.

i hit the character count limit on the original post and was in the process of reorganizing everything, but have been pretty swamped at work, so this project slipped to the wayside.

will revisit this at some point, so keep the suggestions coming...

Wow, fabulous work. Is the first entry getting updated as things are added? I think the post wiki-ish compendium is a great idea.

Tarbuster's Mussy Nebula was a multi thread history piece, with Russ the Fish figuring prominently but ranging widely over areas and personalities. I think it deserves a thread by thread breakdown like the Stonemaster Stories.

I really appreciate the reminder what a fabulous repository this is.

more good stuff HV...

yeah Off White, I will be adding all suggestions to the first post... only problem i currently have is that the first post has a character limit, which i've hit... so i have to break the first post into a few different new threads... which in order to keep everything organized takes time i don't have right now... :) but i will update it in the near future, so keep the suggestions coming.

and nice comments regarding the Mussy Nebula threads... those were head scratchers regarding where to categorize them for sure... i like your suggestion.

that's it, that's all for this thread folks...

please don't post to this thread anymore...

due to a character limit per post, the first post of this thread is now effectively locked and nothing can be added to it...

as such all of the information was divided into the following five threads so that there is room to grow:
