I saw a slideshow by John Cleare at the pre-fire "Ski Mart", Newport Beach circa 1975. He had shots of the classic FA of "The Fishhook Arete."
I dreamed of climbing the route for MANY years and after many other trips up there to Russell etc. finally did it with Todd Battey and Jim Angione in (?) 1995 (on the second attempt).
It was worth waiting for. At least by then we knew the descent.

Adam d - what did you think of Western Front?
Anyone who's familiar, which do you pick for your one trip to Russel during the season, assuming you've done none of them: Star Trekkin', Western Front, Mithral, or Fish Hook?

If I was headed back up to Russell, I'd want to do Fishhook and Startrekkin' (sweet position out there L of mithral, and in the sun WAY earlier than the shivering you can do on Mithral with the sun just feet away). Western Front is worth doing...I think it gets called Grade IV ? but it's not really...no longer than the others.

after this pitch it's a long one of cruiser and fun 5.9 with great stances then 4th to the top.

le bruce, of those four I personally liked Mithral and Startrekkin' the most and Fishhook the least. That's not to say FH or WF are bad, no way. They're well worth repeating. But if you've only got one visit...
One sporty-ish approach I've heard about is to climb Startrekkin' and Mithral together. Since neither is a long route and they share the same approach pitches and finish at about the same place it is possible to climb one, rap the top couple of pitches of the other, and then climb those before topping out and returning to camp for beer.

Wow, thanks for all the psyche on Russell. Visually aesthetic to say the least...
How is the loose rock factor on the Fishhook? I was surprised at the amount of loose on Moon Goddess arete. Similar? How about Mithral or the others? (Fat TIA.)
