I can't believe we don't have a dome thread on ST!!!!

I love domes because they are typically not hard, have good views from the summit, and there are lots of domes to climb in California.

There are many obvious ones to list, but I'd like to hear about and see some more remote and random domes.

Here is a good historical read

http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/937441/West-Side-Story-Sierra-Domes-Donaldson-Ascent-1973

Edit: I'd be happy to include Trip reports and other links to domes here. Please comment on these awesome trip reports. :)

I can confirm on both counts.

I was also surprised by the difficulty of the approach. It didn't look like much but turned out to be steeper and farther than it appears.

I saw a momma big cat and cub on my way in there so it's especially memorable.

Ok, I've already skipped a bunch and the next areas are overwhelming.

That's around 40 domes in the Southern Sierra and I quit before the domiest areas of Courtright, Shaver/Huntington, Shuteye and Tuolumne! Safe to say the Sierra is king of the domes! Though China looks like it has some sweet ones.

I've always wanted to get up to Homer's Nose, but I decided places like CRS and The Gorge of Despair were a lot easier to get to :-)

You took that a few days ago? Very cool.

I've only climbed CRS, but having day hiked all three of the places you mentioned I thought it was harder than CRS but easier than GOD. I think they're all close enough in suckiness that it just comes down to opinion.

But, it's pretty undeniable that the climbing potential is the lowest on Homer's Nose. A big roof along the bottom and lots of blank above, with the exception of the three spots that already have routes... Too bad, since the rock quality seemed outstanding.

Looks easy,

It is right below the summit of Hermit Spire in the CA Needles. Highly recommend "A pitch and 9 takes time" and "South Face".

Exciting groveling for the followers

Great Hermit Spire shots. Climbing that wide crack right on the edge where it drops off into the huge dihedral is just wild.

Well I'm jealous! Madagascar would be my #1 choice for a trip, both for the biodiversity and cool geology. Really great picture, I updated the credit but can just take it down if you want.

Yep, those are knickers.

When Jim and I were in this very quiet and out-of-the-way place, we both were amazed there wasn't more activity here;
but it was late in the year when we were there (1980s).
It's really easy to get to, but relatively un-trodden by Yosemite standards.
Thank goodness climbers are pretty lazy and happy to stay in the ditch.

Boo Dawg was so smart and fortunate to have gotten in here back when he was a bearded youth!
