I hear on the scanner they are prepping an evac of the Magnolia area. Not clear if it's going to be pre-evac, or full-on evac. Given what I'm seeing here in Boulder (smoke increasing A LOT), I fear it's an evac. Don't get yourself stuck up there Edge.

Thanks Callie. We just got an evac call, but there is no way we are leaving yet. The fire is a long way away from us (Castle Rock right in the path, btw) and across Boulder Canyon some 6-8 miles distant. Smoke is increasing but not awful, and we have multiple escape routes in three directions if we need to bail.

No need to be alarmist here yet. It does smell like it is claiming new ground, so we'll pack a bag just in case.

Being prepared is good. Knowing you have an escape route is good. Hopefully you won't end up needing any of it and can stay at the house.

Edge if you do evac you all (including the dog) are welcome to come stay in my guest room - or hell I'm in the process of moving into a 2 BR condo and I'm not living there yet so you could go stay there. Just let us know.

Thanks everyone for the concern, but the sky isn't falling here yet. The pic below shows the fire in orange, evac areas in yellow; we are near the triangle of yellow in the bottom right of the evac zone, only a couple miles from Gross Reservoir. We can go up or down Magnolia at any time, or south by 4WD to Gross Reservoir and Flagstaff Road to Boulder.

I suspect that the authorities are being overly cautious with smoke levels and such. For what it's worth, one of the Timberline Fire Stations are 1/4 mile away at the end of our road, and I'm sure it would become a major staging area if anything moved this way. The big cow pasture that the elk love is adjacent and could land dozens of helicopters if we want to wait for the scenic departure.

Hoping it stays that way! Wind is supposed to kick up this afternoon. Hoping that does not happen because it was lead to a lot fire spotting. No bueno.

Plane traffic overhead back and forth to Denver has picked up considerably.

Those responsible for the fire are now being housed in a Boulder jail facility.

They are two fine men from Alabama. Googling their names indicates both have tangled with the law before (one is a sex offender; the other drug stuff).

A woman was with them too, but not arrested. Losers all of them.

It was inevitable. The transient problem in the woods around Ned is out of control.

We just got a nice interagency visit from the Boulder PD making sure we got notice of the evac. I explained that we were being responsible and keeping an eye on updates, so no problem. As we were talking his partner heard from dispatch that they were not expecting the fire to jump Boulder Canyon.

Still, the wife is now sufficiently scared the fire will magically appear overnight while we sleep. I told her we could spoon like that couple they found in the ashes in Pompeii, a tender love story for the ages, but she's having non of it.

We have a place to stay in Boulder once we get ready, I just hope Moqui doesn't confuse chihuahuas for rabbits or its going to be an interesting few days.

The transients are a huge problem.

I am still hearing on the scanner that police are finding additional illegal campfires! I am baffled.

Try to sleep well. Tomorrow will be a rough day. The weather forecast has the dreaded wind symbol for Ned. :/

My old survival instructor friend Corky is flying a Turbine Commander out of Grand Junction. He was on the fire today! I wanted to be sure before I posted.

Go Corky!

No doubt we've been watching him fly all day - they've been going right over the house.

Wind is really kicking up big. BIG. Smoke is thick in Boulder - really nasty. I can't imagine how bad it is where Edge is.

Just got down to Boulder about 1/2 hour ago. Big fenced yard for the dogs to run in, 8' long refractor telescope with clear views of Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, and the moon. It's hard to feel like a refugee...

Last update from fire personnel as I was coming down: the fire has progressed east to Castle Rock, but has not jumped the Creek (new: one new spot fire being treated aggressively, mostly contained). Feds are taking over the original perimeter, local resources will concentrate on keeping the fire from crossing the Creek. 5 spot crews in that area, precautionary retardant drops, pump trucks stationed directly along Boulder Creek, and heli support.

The suspects are accused of not properly extinguishing a campfire they'd made overnight Thursday into Friday on private property near the Peak to Peak Highway and Cold Springs Road.

So, at least so far, it was stupidity and not maliciousness.

Trump and Ryan ... oh well nevermind

Addendum:

alleged stupidity and not alleged maliciouness

so the presumed, not yet proven firestarters are stupid, but not people who settle in prime wildfire country? I'm gonna chew on that.

Glad you hear you left last night Edge. Planes started early today. Hoping the wind forecast is incorrect (in a good way).

Hi all. Looks like another big day for fire fighters. Wind isn't too bad as of now, but is forecast to be picking up later in the day.
