That's all they have for tankers there? That's a sad commentary on our priorities.
That Pawnee might hold 400 gallons. The DC-10 carries 12,000 gallons.

Check out all the photos Reilly: http://mediacenter.dailycamera.com/2016/07/09/photos-nederland-cold-springs-fire/#1

Several in this series show multiple planes and stuff.

Well, at least they have the BAE 146 but using that A-Star chopper with a 75 gallon bucket
is a sad joke. An Erickson Air-Crane carries 2500 gallons. Sorry for ranting but those are
second class, if that, tools compared to what's available.

I tried to call Tarbuster last night after I heard the fire dropped into Boulder Canyon and didn't get an answer.

I live in Boulder Canyon, somewhat east of the fire area. No evac for us, yet. The fire is about 8 miles or more further west and north. Plenty of smoke yesterday, not so much today, so far.
Last night, speaking with County deputies that stopped by for another reason, they are candidly saying that the fire was started by an unattended transient/homeless campfire near the Peak to Peak Hy and Cold Springs Road. Unattended campfires are a big deal around the area as Boulder County swarms with homeless living in the woods.
As far as air tanker support, I've personally seen a couple of heavy lift type air tankers fly over en route to the area, don't know what model, but much larger than the small single engine a/c pictured above.
At Type II Federal Incident Command team is arriving to take over, and will have more resources with it, including, most likely, more air assets.
I have several friends that live in the mandatory evac areas, hope they get thru this OK.
There are additional pre-evac areas this AM, top of Sugar Loaf road.

I live at the blue dot in the screen shot; the fire originated near the red dot some 8-10 miles west and across Boulder Canyon at about the same elevation as me (8100' +/-).

I took my dog to the transfer station, about a mile from where this originated, earlier yesterday morning. Such a gorgeous area of ponderosa pine and tall grasses, but very, very dry. Afterwards we walked around Mud Lake and enjoyed the area.

A couple hours later our power went out and I smelled smoke, strong and acrid like someone nearby lighting a bonfire full of fresh pine boughs. I walked the dog out to the mailbox to see if there was activity at the fire station at the end of our road, and the smoke was settling into our valley making it surprisingly hard to breath. It wasn't until the power came back some 2 1/2 hours later that we were able to learn of the fire.

The smaller planes dropping retardant are making laps directly overhead on their way to Denver, I presume, to reload. Winds have changed today and no smoke in sight. A little later we're going to walk the dog up the top of Forsythe Peak to get a view. Yes, the new dog likes to walk.

Thoughts and prayers to the Ned community. My wife keeps relaying heart wrenching posts from the local facebook group; this is going to be tough for a while.

The state of confusion

Of course it was an unattended fire left by transients.
I hope it burned their asses.

Good to hear from you, Loran. I was just about to ask if anyone knew.

In the pix Crimpergirl linked there is a 4 engine aircraft as well as the smaller plane serving up slurry in a hurry. I was camping in that area midweek up by Rainbow lakes and was surprised there were no fire restrictions at the time.

I've been listening to the emergency radio dispatch today. Many continue to burn campfires up near Peak-to-Peak and LEO are having to deal with that. Unbelievable people burn when it is so effing hot, there is a ban, and the environment is so dry. Idiots.

Hoping the wind blows the right way, and
glad for the relatively mild fire season here so for.

Good reporting, gang. Nice photos, too!

Godspeed, everyone!

at metro

so winds out of WSW. that's at least good news for Ned for the day.

The fire has been downwind from our position since the start.
We saw it begin as a large smoke plume on the lee side of a hill just northeast of our neighborhood.

Air-quality here has been fine, owing to prevailing winds. Much less smoke visible today than yesterday, even from Eldora ski area.

Lots of people from the evacuation zones still at the high school.
It ripped through what I would call a low to mid-density population region, in mountain town terms.

The fire as seen from the peak behind our home. No visible flames, but there seemed to be at least 4-5 hot spots in the smoke. Winds up here are gusting gently, which is not good.

We watched one of the big double rotor helicopters fly up canyon and cross in front of Longs Peak on its way to the blaze, but the still wing craft have subsided overhead today.

Glad you are okay, Roy.

From what I saw so far the cause is undetermined, though

ColoNative may disagree.

This is why the Homeless, hobo, transient Drainbows should not be camping for days on end. They will burn this entire place down. A few years back the Dome fire above Boulder was caused by an illegal Hobo campsite.

But wait,

Wow, you have a lot of time/energy to hate on the homeless. Problems acknowledged. Now, how do we solve them?

What about the other cities that give them thar hobo a ticket to here? Are going to consume bus tickets every other day for these people?

Sounds like a weak plan to me.

Best,

Boulder Canyon is closed west of the Sugarloaf/Magnolia Junction as of 2pm... A DC10 and a BAe-146 are working the fire, along with a Chinook helicopter. Magnolia Road is open, however, as is Coal Creek Canyon.
