This is the exact kind of sh#t I have come to expect from this group.

You can go climb with or without your significant other. If that said person forbids you, then f*#k him/her. Why sacrifice? And go find another reason for why your climbing career is done.

I told my wife long before getting married that climbing isnt something I'd give up for anyone under any circumstances so long as I found it fulfilling, but if she didnt dig it she could climb with me or not as she pleased.

We got married 5 months into a climbing road-trip and things are still good. Its all about what and how you prioritize. If someone is going to make you sacrifice who and what you are, regardless how good their intentions might be, they likely arent right for you for a whole slew of reasons besides ending your climbing career.

Don't mistake the symptom for the disease.

Last year a young climber asked me for some advice concerning girlfriends. I said that, given the fact that i had been married three times, perhaps I wasn't the best source, but he persisted. Seems that he and his friends were wondering, as I once did, whether it was best to look for a girlfriend who climbed or one who didn't climb. I said that I could never figure that one out myself, but if he was after one who climbed to make sure she had green camalot hand size because she would be able to get the rope up on cracks he wouldn't be able to climb.

Girl climbs in the 70's. Girl meets boy. Falls in love, gets married, has six children. He doesn't want her to climb -- if she falls and dies, he raises the 6 kids. That's fair. She still has the best life ever, and when the youngest is 14 she starts to climb again. What a great thing! Joshua Tree, Tahquitz, Yosemite, Sierras!! And come home to my fantastic family.

BTW, my son just took me on Tahquitz for Mother's Day, where we simulclimbed three easy routes for speed. Car to car, including friction descent and walk-around, about 6 hrs. Kicked my butt for sure.

Thank you, GDavis, you are an awesome son!

Oh, don't get me wrong. Lots of stories for us ladies!!

I was suppose to start a different thread of a similar theme but haven't gotten around to it.

All these guys seem to think it would be easy for a girl to find a guy who climbs but in reality.... NOT!

Aint that right Crimpie?

Boy meets (hot) girl

first date boy tells (hot) girl that boy is in love with something called climbing and will be gone periodcally sometimes for the weekend sometimes for a couple of weeks maybe even a whole month from time to time.

boy marries girl in El Cap meadow then runs off to do half dome with best man.

boy now has a lovely teenage daughter and been married 18 years.

Just this past month boy has done 3 routes in Zion

My climbing may take a back seat every now and then but it will never be DONE until I am DONE.

And then there's Jane Austen's rhetorical question for women, "What are men compared to rocks and mountains?" (Pride and Prejudice)

Crimpie and Susan, agree it is not at all easy for us gals!!!

ok...

Non-climber girl (but skydives) meets non-climber boy (jump pilot), get married, have two kids.

Girl notices climbers while up hiking in Idyllwild and Josh and the desire to climb swoops down. She asks husband if she can take lessons to learn to climb.

He says, "No, your first job is to be a wife and mother".
Girl discouraged until one day indoor gym opens up in town, now's her chance.
Eventually dumps husband who is control freak and spends from 1992 till present climbing and loving it.

Girl out in climber dating world, sucks badly.

Present: girl meets super athletic/adventurous guy and is teaching him to climb, he is excelling.
Girl happy!!!!

Girl meets Boy

Girl has done some climbing, likes it OK, but likes to ski more than climb

Girl and Boy like to backpack and ski

Girl and Boy get married

Girl and Boy have daughter

Girl and Boy backpack and ski with daughter

Family moves to Chicago

Daughter grows up, turns 18

Girl says to Boy, "lets go climbing!"

Girl and Boy travel west of the Mississippi

Girl climbs and climbs and climbs

Sometimes Girl climbs with Boy

But Boy needs to work so Girl can go on climbing trips out West

Daughter learns to climb

Girl and Daughter climb and climb and climb and backpack and backpack

Boy REALLY needs to work to support Girl's climbing obsession

BOY MUST WORK! Boy does join Girl on occasion for ski, backpack and climb fun.

GIRL HAS IT MADE!

Girl and Boy still really love each other, been married for 29 years. One of the marriage vows was, "We'll go our separate ways together." For us it's worked. Love you, spousal unit!
