Medium Sooze and I were discussing how many possible scenarios we have seen where the climbing guys stop climbing after a relationship. Short of pregnancy, this rarely comes up with the women climbers, we resolved.
Ones we came up with:
Boy meets Climber Girl, they get preggers, climbing career DONE!
Boy meets Girl who says she's a climber, he moves in, they get in nesting mode. Climbing career DONE!
Boy meets non-climbing Girl, they move in together, she becomes the better climber - he gets depressed. Climbing career DONE!
Boy meets Girl, she seems active, but when they move in together, she forbids him to be away with other people (especially if there is another woman there). Climbing career DONE!
Boy meets Girl at climbing gym. She wants to "learn how to climb" and pursues him with great rigor. She gets him.
Climbing career DONE!

yer insightful, but too cynical!
You've met my daughter, Natalie, Erik. I sorta feel like Sooze has, as well, though it hasn't worked out that way. In any case she IS a climber, on her own terms.
My conclusion; luck into doing it right and it's never 'DONE' and in a best case scenario, like I am attempting to live, you just high five it into another generation.
isn't that how WE got here, E Wolfe?

I have two (former) partners who have fallen victim to the nesting instinct.
"Hey, wanna climb on Saturday?"
"Nah, gotta work on the garden with (insert SO name here."
"Nah, we have to have dinner with (insert name of other couple here)"
"Nah, we have tickets to Circque Du Soleil."
I've heard em all.

Girl dumps Tucker many years ago and Tucker starts soloing El Cap routes back to back in his g-string harness.
Girl dumps Shipley and then goes on a "I want to die" free soloing binge.

Its not the climbing career thats done, its the HOBBY thats done.
Some guys take being a boyfriend/husband/father as a hobby. young married dudes rarely have hobbies. These aren't true climbers, but people looking to pass the time until they can start shooting out some children with an activity thats fun and provides comradery.
A guy that I know just had his first baby, and his wife told him he wasn't allowed to climb anything that required a rope anymore. He makes a weekly pilgrimage to the bouldering gym, and wishes of bigger things... if you want to keep climbing, better tie your pecker to your leg.

Clarification for GDavis:
career: a field for or pursuit of consecutive progressive achievement especially in public, professional, or business life
hobby: a pursuit outside one's regular occupation engaged in especially for relaxation

My#2 ice climbing partner got married last summer to a womaN with a kid.
He climbed a grand total of 2 times last winter. Once with me and once with the new wife. The rest of the time the kid had ski races or the wife needed her hubby... yada yada ya.....

There's nothing intrinsically important about climbing. It's just something some people choose to do because they like it. And then some of those climbers find other things to do.
I've managed to keep climbing for more than fifty years because I found other things in life, including a non-climbing wife, a daughter, and a ``real'' career that were, in general, more compelling than climbing, and this has allowed me to continue to enjoy climbing too.
One of my observations is that you find out if you really enjoy climbing (as opposed to climbing accomplishments) when you start to lose your peak abilities to the ravages of age.
Personally, I'd hate to have reached my somewhat advanced age and look back on little more than a very long string of ascents...

Fun, funny thread.
boy climbs. boy climbs with other boys. all boys begin to pass through various stages of adulthood. some boys fall prey to scenarios mentioned above.
like a game of musical chairs, one falls out each round when the music stops, until one boy is left, climbing.
boy looks around and says "how did I get here?"
