Interesting Thread. ..... Everybody's story is different. I agree too with Donini's post 5/11.
Fo Yo: Guy and Gal meet in late teens, get married and bounce out two babies.
Gal's Bro turns her Hub onto Rock.
While Dude puts himself through college plus working he makes time to get betta at the Rock.
Climbing persists while two more kiddos enter family.
Hub gets good at climbing and says to Wife.....tired of going to the crags alone. Time to join me.
Terror of heights stricken wife freaks but finally consents to go.
She meets tons of Super people and has lots of cool trips. Climbs only when pushed.........
Years later. Hub dies, her fear of heights greatly diminished, and climbing becomes super fun and important.
Life....live it....a thoughtful, joyous day at a time. Yo never know what it will deliver :DD

My wife 'lets' me climb. But mostly because she knows I'd go insane without it. Its my most effective form of stress management and I usually go before work when they're asleep anyway.
But then she gets to work out for her triathlons all the time too. Its a good tradeoff.
Our 4 kids seem to love doing it all with us too.
dang that makes me sound so old.

Boy is a weekend warrior spending 20 weeks or better a year out climbing. Boy meets girl at local climbing club, she's a recent graduate looking for experience. 2 years of dating, weekend trips and climbing and all is well. Boy and Girl marry. Boy climbs 2 days a year (in-consecutive days) a year now.
That's a lot like PPP's but true.

"Boy meets Girl. Girl wants to "learn how to climb" and pursues him with great rigor. Girl gets boy. Girl learns to climb. Boy becomes jealous pain in ass. Girl punts Boy. Next contestant. Girl dates better climber. "
That happened to me! hahaha
Heres one....
Boy meets boy. Boy has great time climbing with boy. During an epic, boy spoons boy to stay alive. Boy falls in love with boy. Boys move to Connecticut to pursue legal gay marriage and continue climbing together forever?

Wifey doesn't complain about my climbing. It's more that I realize that the climbing is just for me, and that I'm making things harder for them (probably a false sense of my own indispensibility), and I limit it myself probably more than she'd do. But as the kid is now an increasingly self-sufficient teen who likes my company in smaller and smaller doses, I hope to be spending lots more time on rock. I think she'll be okay with that.

So...let's say you find that climbing PARTNER. What then?
Lots of scenarios mentioned...but every stage has its ups and downs, right?

Dirka sent me the link to this and all I could think was, "What poor timing!" He's already not happy since I'm moving to a flat part of the country to pursue my PhD.
However, I did feel better after reading through everyone's stories. Seems to me that if you find the right person, climbing will find the right place in your life as well.
Oh, and Lazy Eye, I'm going to keep this in mind: "Many years ago, my mother told my wife some very worthwhile advise, 'When it comes to Robert, just don't ask him what he's planning on doing, just ask him about what he's already done, that way you never have to worry about him.'"

I don't know, it's a "waxes and wanes" sort of thing...
when I met Debbie in 1973 I was climbing, but not much...
went off to graduate school in NY City with her, had a daughter
started climbing more in 1979
started ice climbing in the early 80s
started going to bigger mountains in the mid 80s
Debbie doesn't climb, Stephanie doesn't climb, but they're ok with me climbing (as far as I can tell)...
what year is it, 2009? that would be 37 years?
I've met and climbed with many women in that time too...
It seems to work out as Richard said, but for me it is a dynamic thing which will oscillate between the loci of my life: family, work, climbing... recently it has been climbing...

Boy meets girl
Boy takes girl climbing, but
Boy forgets harness, shoes, and belay device
Boy improvises a sling harness and biner brake, climbs in Converse All-Stars
Girl gets blisters on hands holding a fall, 'cuz boy didn't build the biner break correctly!
Boy marries girl.
Boy tries again on 9-day Tuolumne camping trip...
Loads car with everything except the bag of clothes,
they have a dirt-loving trip, boy thinks he has a keeper
Boy takes her for a "hike" up Lembert Dome, too close to the steep side
Girls feet are sliding, can't go up, can't go down, falling would be death
Girl and boy survive, but girl formally retires from climbing
(Boy acknowledges he is an idiot)
Life goes on, boy must choose climbing vs. girl
Boy not happy giving up either
Stuff happens, life gets complicated,
More stuff happens, boy and girl part ways, life gets simple again
(and boy at least knows what he wants in a life companion)
Boy takes his kids on weekends to Indian Rock,
and dreams of future Yosemite trips
Boy finds another girl who is wonderful and compatible in every way,
and she also turns out to be a kick-@ss climbing babe!
Boy continues to have occasional misadventures with his buds,
and also have cool adventures with his babe.
The long road leads to a good place.
Or is the place made good because of what was learned on the long road?

This inverts the originall premise of a relationship ending climbing.
I know of multiple instances of couples wherein one takes up climbing and the other doesn't. Within 6 months they are no longer a couple. This is not gender dependent.
