If you give up climbing because of a relationship, no matter what the circumstances, you never had a climbing career- you were just a dilettante.

Never, never, never. If any of those scenarios comes to fruition, the man was never a climber.

I'm in hibernation mode right now. I'm married with three kids [13, 10, 7], paying a mortgage, and trying to keep my current job. I'm coaching two little league teams and acting as half of a full time taxi service [ballet, jump rope club, jazz band, concert band, orchestra, little league games, volunteering at the snack stand,...]. However, I'm running a lot and working out regularly to stay within reach of decent climbing shape.

With that said, my best friend in high school and college was a solid climber. He met a chick, got hitched, moved to Texas [why, why, why?], had kids, settled down, gained weight, and I inherited all of his gear. He's done. I have trouble ever considering that we did some serious ascents on Cannon and in the Gunks when not too many people were around climbing. In my mind, he was never a climber. It's not a bad thing, but it's weird....

My wife and I are expecting our second child in September. I told her, "My next big wall will probably be my last, I suppose, with a second kid and all ..."

This triggers a number of unexpected responses: "Don't you need a new rope? Tell me what kind you want and I'll buy it for you ... You should take more time for your end-of-May El Cap trip ... You should schedule another wall for August ... You need to keep climbing, 'cuz when you don't you're an as#@&%e ..."

I'm married with a 4 and 2 year old. I have a full time big-city job. Saturday saw me fuggin sending at Sugarloaf. Well, climbing at Sugarloaf at least.

I've had lulls (the most major one was surfing induced) but have always drifted back into the fold.

On the way back home from yet another kick-ass caving trip in the Roppel Cave section of the Mammoth Cave System. We were underground 28 hours and discovered, explored and surveyed another thousand feet of passage - woo-hoo!

But I just *HAD* to answer this one.

This was me:

"Boy meets Girl, she seems active, but when they move in together, she forbids him to be away with other people (especially if there is another woman there). Climbing career DONE!"

You're young and stupid, and you find someone who you think really 'loves' you. So you marry her. You don't realize that love doesn't have much to do with feelings, and that love is as much volitional as it is emotional. For instance, I believe that love is something you DO for someone when you don't FEEL like loving them.

My ex-wife just couldn't stand me climbing and caving. She felt very unloved when I was away. We fought before and after almost every trip. She would not negotiate any deals, either, which is a pity, as she could have nailed me for all sorts of schwag. I'd have given her anything just to let me go climbing.

My career was almost over. I tried to keep climbing, but it was really hard. You'd get out with your friends, but be unable to keep up because you didn't have the strength you need, that you get when you're climbing all the time. In 12 years of marriage, I got up El Cap only once.

Anyway, she eventually came to her senses and dumped me. And thus began my Post-Divorce Renaissance.

One El Cap route before, 35 El Cap routes after.

You do the arithmetic.

Sewellymon quotes & responds to:

"10B4E WROTE,

"single climber guy meets non climber girl. climbing time reduced 50%. They get married, and have a kid, climbing time reduced another 50%. have another kid, and his career is done. . . .at least for another 18 years. "

AMEN Welcome to my world"

As I've heard many times before I believe the exact quote from the wife went, " NO MORE WALLS JEFF".

Climbing career DONE!

"Y'all make it seem like there is nothing but a bunch of dependent breeders out there. "

Ya'll haven't dated much lately, have you? It is very, VERY difficult to find a woman who is passionate about ANYTHING! Seriously. How can I expect a woman to understand something that I am passionate about, or working a crack until you puke, etc. if she has nothing that she is herself passionate about. Shopping, buying starbucks, spending $200 on jeans, etc. doesn't count. End result is a lot of serious climbers are mostly single.

And since when should any person presume to be able to tell another person, married or not, what they can and cannot do? Someone telling me I can no longer do walls, etc. can get f*#ked! I can't be with you if I can't respect you and you don't respect me. People who are passionate about something and have a life and don't think their happiness depends upon someone else understand this.

There's more to life than looking pretty and doing nothing. And for married peeps, there's more to life than throwing your kids at every sport/event there is because you have no life yourself.
