I do believe in some, carefully controlled Affirmative Action, but only when its application does not deprive another equally or better qualified applicant from the opportunity
You're a clueless idiot.
Affirmative action is racism.

Affirmative action is racism.
What then affirmative reaction? Anti-racism?
Why are you riding this dead horse blue? I thought we determined over on the other thread that you are not a racist.

I did get into UC Berkeley though I am not Asian* and I didn't have that great a set of SAT scores. I am very smart though and got myself in.
No bribery or skullduggery, though I am a big fan of The Dead.

Nobody should have to like anybody for any reason.
Its not about liking someone, its about how you treat them. Equally..

bluering said Affirmative action is racism.
Minorities are significantly more likely to grow up in poor neighborhoods with higher crime, bad schools, higher stress, threats of physical violence, having an incarcerated family member and having a hard time even getting enough to eat without government assistance (school lunches which Republicans seem to enjoy belittling these days) but if someone overcomes that and applies to College and we give them a slight statistical advantage in the application process because of their race...THAT'S when it starts being racism?

A consent decree is an agreement or settlement to resolve a dispute between two parties without admission of guilt.[1][2] The plaintiff and the defendant ask the court to enter into their agreement, and the court maintains supervision over the implementation of the decree in monetary exchanges or restructured interactions between parties.[3][4][5][6] It is similar to and sometimes referred to as an antitrust decree, stipulated judgement, settlement agreements or consent judgment.[7][8] Consent decrees are frequently used by federal courts to ensure that businesses and industries adhere to regulatory laws in areas such as antitrust law, employment discrimination, and environmental regulation.[9][10][11]

Don't you realize that the program that grants free college tuition to American Indians is a racist ploy to keep the tribes from pickin' cotton or working in Casinos

Circumstances cannot be racist.
Government policies can be.
sure they can, if they were created by peoples attitudes. Government policy didn't create. "black neighborhoods". People' attitudes did.
Is affirmative action discrimination? In a way it is. It discriminates against whites in an effort to right the actions of the past. Growing up there were many jobs and scholarships that I didn't get because I was white and couldn't overcome the extra points that minorities got.
Do I begrudge this? Nope.. I did for awhile, but then I took a deeper looks at how discrimination has held entire groups of people back.
Is it still necessary today? Thats the question that I ask. . I believe that it certainly was at one point, but am not so certain today. At some point a human has to take over responsibility for where their life is.
( including drunks who behave like as#@&%es, right wing anti government types, redneck crackers, and other types of minorities )

I've always found it difficult to not have a NICE..."phucking" day...
yeah, telling people to Have a Nice Day just seems so automatic and phony to me
for many years now when people say that to me I tell them "I have made other plans"

Driving out of the mall one day I passed a black guy with a sign. The sign said, "Need money to go back to Africa." Fascinating the number of levels that plays on.
For most races in the US now, children are being raised by other children. That being the case any group of people in a poorer economic situation will see slower improvement with time. Even when a Dad and Mom have fought their way up a little, it won't change the world their kids see. The kids will still see the average.

Bingo!
My ancestors came here poor, and they were minorities. We got over it.
Without handouts.
Racism will always exist, but it is not the problem it's perceived to be. It's more of a systematic tool to pressure people.
