Rode my road bike every day for two weeks totaling 886 miles doing a Strava challenge.

The first week I did 435 miles, the second week I did 451.

Quite unexpectedly, I finished 36th overall, and 10th in the USA (click for full size):

Before yesterday's final ride, I did a 2.6 mile trail run as a warmup, since the 1/4 mile driveway I had to climb to start the ride averages 20.9%, and the final few hundred feet are 25%! (on a road bike with 34 X 27 low gear).

Looking forward to 2 days off the bike!

You must have a GREAT saddle! Awesome job HK! Don't think my bottom could hold up to that thrashing!....or the legs, knees, lungs, etc etc
WTF kind of grades are those??????? Crazeeeeeeeee

Neat stats....I like Strava and I also use the Garmin connect stuff.

Jay, I always wondered what a climb would look like on the GPS software.

Well time to go do sumthin'

Sitting here in Downieville, and its raining hard. We need the rain, so on one hand I am happy for it, on the other hand....my bike is stashed on top of Yuba Pass, and I am super psyched for a 35k classic roller ski with 3,800ft of steady smooth pavement uphill. As a fire smoke refugee I have happily discovered the Yuba Pass/Sierra Buttes region for training the last few days.

I have had a great summer of focused aerobic capacity training for XC racing. Last spring I entered a race series well above my middle age speed...but it got me inspired and I re-connected with a former Salomon/Fischer marathon teammate, Scott Johnston, who is now one of the top nordic coaches in the US. Scott is also a climber and has been Steve House's coach for some years. Look for a new book on training they just co-wrote and sent off to the publisher, due out early next spring. Scott generously offered to help me out with some training knowledge and coaching at a distance, and I am feeling great results so far. Been doing a combo of weight lifting, lots of trail running, roller skiing, a bit of cycling. I have never trained with such focus and consistency before. Not climbing nearly as much as last year, but I do feel strong when I do.

Last weekend was fun, Roller-skied from Lee Vining to top of Tioga Pass, then the next day climbed the Rostrum with my son Braden. Might have been better with a rest day in between, but we pulled it off! With some struggle, and I was worked for a few days after.

Some longer aerobic highlights of the summer have been Donner Summit to Squaw run (3:18), full east-west traverse of Castle Peak (2:45), Squaw Mt. run race (brutal 44:18, puked at the finish after good final sprint), Stinson Beach to East summit of Mt.Tam and back (3:25).

Starting to shift into more specific strength, hill bounding, uphill double pole, and speed work...and very psyched for a big winter of racing!

Peter, you will be scary this winter! Glad you touched base with Scott, he has been doing good stuff with training.

Did a 30 mi loop over and around the Whittier hills this morning (bike)

Colima wasn't the kickass hill I was expecting.

The Whittier Greenway is more pedestrian than bike friendly (too crowded, too many cross streets.) But It is a really cool re-purposing of a railway right of way complete with using the old tressels.

I think this will become a recurring hot weather loop though. With a 6:00 Am start I'm shaded by various features except for the last 7 or 8 mi home

Actually the saddle (that came with the bike) is apparently knott so great a fit for me. The last 5 or 6 days I was getting kind of sore. Gonna get a new one soon (will also save about 125 grams). Other than that, no issues - as long as I drank enough recovery beer. ;-)

The driveway I mentioned is the Tourist Club on Mt Tam, and the driveway is extremely steep and narrow (built in 1912). It was finally concrete-poured in the early 60's. Here's the Strava segment:

While I was focusing on high miles and minimal climbing, I still racked up 57,643' in the 2 weeks. In Marin there's no way around big climbing!

Marin for vertical? Try southern Ecuador (where I am right now). Yesterday, a measly 47 kilometer day. But three, two to three thousand foot climbs. (and the decents were on this sh#t ass gravel and pot hole ¨highway¨. No sweet coasts down. Cramps in my hands and burnt a set of brake pads going down. Unforetunately my map doesn´t give such detail. I suffered big time and was doing a lot of walking by the end of the day. (mind you I´m peddeling a 100 lb rig with knobbyish tires.)

In the last 9 weeks I´ve racked up about 2500 kms. (not actually that much if you divide by the number of days. But, damn, some of those days brought tears to my eyes.) ha

Crossing into Peru tomorrow.

by the way, I´m in this little bitty border town (Zumba), and in this internet booth, 6 other people have logged onto Supertopo at some time or another. Small world.

Wow, that sounds burly! And I cant imagine such steep descents on such a heavily laden bike. Very cool that you can check in from afar...

Marin for vertical?

Well, certainly nothing like what you described, but you can rack up some serious elevation without thinking about it. Here's one from a day I WAS thinking about it:

I think I might have posted this before; if so i guess I'm milking it for all it's worth! ;-)

Yup, i'm thinking I remember the quad Dipsea, the the two-times I ran it, as being in the same leaque as grand canyon rim to rim...

Whoa! What years did you run the Quad?

Edit: Looks like you did it in '95 and '96.

http://www.run100s.com/qd.htm

I did it in '99 and '00, with the last one effectively ending my running "career" - twisted my ankle badly while in 9th place at top of 3rd lap, yet continued on for the last 10 miles or so to the finish like a delusional idiot. The ego is a dangerous thing!

Hey what's the deal with Grand Canyon rim-to-rim? What was it like?

Sounds menacing. ;-)

Dipsea Quad sounds very intense! I am excited to just run my own double, meaning out and back, without the pressure of racing, just me and the trees and fog and occasional wealthy thin Marin County resident...

Yesterday I ran the course for the Moab trail half marathon, and a little more (14 miles all told) to get back to my car. Yikes! That's a challenging course to try to go very fast on! That marathon may kill me, come November!

Then I got the call and guided a canyon...

^^^^^great Jay, that's not inspiring much confidence in me considering I'm a slow trail runner to begin with....is the most challenging part prior to the cutoff? I just gotta make it to the cutoff and I should be able to finish ... Looking for beta, Buddy. : )
