The cutoff times look pretty generous!

Yes, I thought so too, but considering the last soccer team I played on was the "Wheezers and Geezers" you might get my obsession with altitude, how many feet rise per mile, average grade etc. Damn it all Garmin...ruined my life....data analysis paralysis!

Anyway, hope to see you there! But I'm only doing the half.

Nice!

So yesterday I ran much of the second half of the Moab trail marathon... This is going to be my first hangdog marathon, I'm wiring each section, (training on roads gets boring) later this week ill get on the part I haven't done yet. The part I did this time went faster than the first half the other day, less scenic however.

It had its interesting parts though. I found out where some of the water draining out of Colorado is going. As anyone who has climbed at the Ice Cream Parlor will remember, there is a dip in the road near the hunter canyon campground, that sometimes has a little water to drive through. Yesterday, I got to that point to find standing water a distance of over one hundred feet across the road, with cars parked on either side and people floating across on air mattresses! Wtf? But, It with temps in the eighties, I could use the soak, and the adventure. I waded to chest deep! People were camped, on the other side, waiting for the water level to subside. One guy gave me a phone number to call his dad and tell him he'd be a day late for dinner. It felt wierd when I crossed back to see a dozen or so people resigned to an extra night camping.

Today I had to cross there for work, guiding @ ICP. The water level was several feet lower, but still the second most largest body of water I'd ever seen there!

I got a running start and plowed in, water splashing over the whole windshield of the full size ford E350 Van! To the delight of my client and copilot from Indiana, I might add! At the crag we were joined by some Scandinavian women who had swam it, and later by a team from Basalt Co, in a full size pickup; "Well, I've seen worse, but it did go over the hood!"

Later, driving out, the water had further receded, we saw a Subaru make it across and so, it was pronounced "Casual"!

^^^^ WOWSA Know exactly where you mean....I've ridden and driven through there many times ... I wouldn't have thought more than ankle deep and some years barely a trickle....but to hear about people swimming it! Yikes!

I'm still tracking those topo maps of the course pretty carefully....I dunno...

Jaybro,

can you elaborate on what the half marathon portion of the course is like. Is it steep, rocky, sandy, etc. Just trying to figure out how my next 5 weeks of training should be focused. Coming from sea level on the east coast!

Missed Sunday - something about being up for 22 hours on Saturday and baking my feet. Damn, the feet hurt on Monday. Today was much better with the cool weather. 8 miles of hills and thrills.

Fat Paul, the first six or so miles are steep, sandy, And rocky. It's up hill in general, some short parts you might want to use your hands. It's a four wheel drive road that had me shaking my head in parts until I would get to the top of one of the steep sections and find huge bolt anchors several inches across that assume are for connecting to winch cables to pull rigs up what would otherwise be I possible terrain. For a full size vehicle (but I drive a Saab so what do I know?) some of it approaching third class. A cool hike! After the highest point it gets much easier and there Is sandy downhill for three or so miles. Before rejoins the Kane creek road there is fairly steep, technical trail, descending several hundred feet in the last half mile. I lost the trail several times and ended up doing fifth class moves (in five fingers! ) in spots. I'm sure it will be more straight fwd when they have the course marked. Once on the road, it's uphill for at least a half mile, up some switchbacks, etc. another couple miles down a rocky road get you back to the start .

I dont know how you're gonna train at sea level, but I'd say run every hill you can find! It was pretty warm, 80's, when I ran it, and I don't deal well with heat. So that probablly made it seem worse, than it really was. It'll be cooler in November!

Roller ski level 3 intervals in St. Louis, Forest Park. Not used to training with such humidity! Clothes were soaked, like I jumped in the lake...opted for taxi back to hotel rather than dripping all over the Metro.

Here for 5 days with Bandaloop. Looking to trail run somewhere tomorrow.

I'm told I have very nice feet for a man.....

New current favorite Moab area trailrun!
In my continuing effort to hangdog the Moab trail marathon, I ran (indeed in 5fingers) a 6.7 mile loop, amasaback parking to amasaback parking, over the cliffhanger, and Jackson trails. Beautiful terrain, spectacular views, waist deep Kane creek crossing, who could ask for more?
The Jackson's trail deserves special note. This is an excellent, somewhat rough hiking/running trail, but it reminds me again of the high standard at which some people around here mtn bike! No way would I do that! Narrow loose trails, sheer drops, all kinds of scary shirt! I' dbe walking my bike/ giving it a ride!

Edit: I'm going to beef up my five fingers, I've been running / Guiding in Bikilia's, but I'm lusting after the spyridons, lots more sticky rubber and thicker sole. And they are on sale.

Edit 2: oh and yesterday I did a six mile mtb ride after guiding a wet cnyn... Someone has to keep the business going while the boss is puking up Castelton

All you country dudes with your fancy this and fancy that.

In the LA area we do our runnin' on asphalt, in cheap work boots , inexpensive dress slacks, and a 45 caliber pistol. ( and never run with back to traffic)

Last night:

2 mile run
3 mile speed walk with dog.
