Now, about Frankie Goes To Hollywood.

While they may not have had the success that mainstream bands like U2 had, FGTH did all right.

Were they a one-hit wonder? Well... The band had THREE singles at number one in the charts and a fourth at number two and a fifth at number four. "Relax" was the seventh best selling UK hit ever and they were only the second band in UK history to reach number one on the charts with three singles. Even after their decline in popularity they had singles in the top five! Overall, this "one-hit wonder" band sold more than six million albums. Not as many as the Dead perhaps, but not too shabby.

Coz--I've been in the same room with you before. Don't really feel the need to do that again. You seem more interested in the "who knew Yabo more" dick measuring competition than an actual discussion. Actually, based on your stance on other threads, that sorta seems how you approach everything. So, no, I don't really need to engage in an ego battle with you. I got my own ego to duke it out with, and that's enough for now.

Simon, thanks for being the voice of reason in these parts. You stand tall among a bunch of blow hards, and that's a hard job to accomplish anywhere (let alone on the taco stand).

Mountain Dog...

Since you had difficulty comprehending my earlier post, let me go into full detail on the DOLT shirt. Not that I need to--this is a business, not a co-operative--but just, as an example, so you can see what I go through to do things right.

The original DOLT logo is iconic. It was before my time but from a purely design aesthetic, the logo is timeless. I recognized this last year and started asking around as to who owned the rights. I went deep into the history of climbing and spoke with everyone from Robbins, Chouinard, Lauria, Calderwood, Caldwell and several others who knew Bill in an attempt to get a lead to the legal rights owner. Don Lauria was kind enough to supply a patchy link to the husband and wife who acquired the rights to the DOLT brand out of probate court back in the 1970s. Another two weeks of research led me to these fine people in Nevada. Not only were they excited to see the logo used on shirts, they sent me original DOLT artwork, Bill's poetry, his patents, and other paraphernalia. (Yes, all of it will eventually be sent to the YCA museum when I finish drooling on it.) Hell, I have one item that is so effin unbelievable it gives me wood!

But I digress...

In return for licensing the DOLT brand these folks wanted me to make donation (based on sales) to their charitable school/church building work for the ultra-poor in South America. Since I already donate a percentage of everything I sell, (did you tithe today, Mountain Dog?) this was a no-brainer.

Now, what was that about my work being disrespectful and a ripoff?

When I first saw the title of this thread I thought, WTF? and gave it a miss. Then my curiosity got the best of me and I had a read.

I knew John and while I never tied into a rope with Yabo I was a frequent participant in his "Ark Larks". Yabo never said "Relax".
More likely it was, "Got a smoke?"

Now if I saw someone wearing a T shirt that said;

"Arc On With The Power of the Burnouts of Gore"!

I'd definitely think of Yabo.

This other thing reeks of travesty.
Show the brother some respect.

Rest in Peace Yabo!

I just received a very nice letter from someone who posts here. To be honest, many of you have written directly to me to express your support. This letter sticks out... To protect the writer's annonymity (you will see why) I have deleted his name toward the end.

Dear Simon,

I saw the shitstorm on the Taco about the Yabo Says Relax shirts and
just wanted to give you some support, but I am a pussy to post on that
thread because, well, I'm just a wanker who didn't know Yabo, can't
pull down harder than those defending his misinterpreted honour and
thus would be pushed aside swiftly. As I said, I didn't know Yabo, but
know enough about him to think his ego wouldn't get in the way of
this. I do know you however, even though only virtually and I know
that you work a lot with the climbing shirt designs, always seek
permission and while you maybe make some money on these designs you
also donate decent coinage to climbing causes.

I know if someone would make a shirt or poster of any of my good
friends and climbing partners who have passed away (self-inflicted or
otherwise), maybe even giving a few bucks to the climbing community, I
would see it as a way of honouring their memory and not as blasphemy.

Maybe some think the design is lame, maybe some feel offended, but to
them XXXX (edit by Simon) Says Relax.

Simon,

maybe a "Yabo, never forgotten" or some such design that his many friends saw as ultimately respectful would calm the storm?

Thanks Nita.

Yeah, "Got a smoke?" is probably the one that sticks with everyone eh?

I know controversy sells stuff, has always been in climbing and sometimes like this, is even a little fun. But I hate to see all this back biting amongst the tribe here.

I think you should take into account that many of John's friends are offended...

I was one of John's friends... knew him before you were born. And, his surving family member has no issue.

I won't be buying your shirt.

OH NO! What ever will I do?????

drljefe, I am as anti-establishment/dirtbag climber as they come. Also, if I show you all my Dead show ticket stubs will that prove it to you?

Buggs bunny, Let me know when your in the Tahoe region so we can go 'dancing'.

I must say the insults here are very creative! Keep them coming! Maybe they will inspire IHP to come up with something original.
