I was thinking about his recovery yesterday. This was not the turn I was expecting.

I never met him, but he was a positive force in so many lives. This is all we can ask for during our short stay in this world.

Rest well Bobby.

Oh my god...this is so unexpected. And so sad.

Bobby felt like family to me. His SuperTopo thread detailed such an amazing life prior to, and especially following, the accident. The guy was simply an incredible human being, and he was surrounded by family and friends who appeared to be cut from the same cloth.

My heart-felt condolences to those family members and friends who knew him and loved him. He was truly a gift to our world.

Tears for Bobby...he was a great guy.

i met him at the base of an Ice climb in his local stomping grounds, Cody.

He was genuinely a warm soul in a very cold place, and his spirit and enthusiasm warmed us all.

you will be missed Bobby, thanks for all the great pictures.

Bobby lived across the street from my sister and right next door to my mother. Last night he was rushed to the hospital because he had the flu. I heard this morning that he died. So so sad. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

THIS IS A NOTE ABOUT BOBBY THAT WAS JUST SENT AROUND NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC BY BOBBY'S FRIEND REBECCA MARTIN - NICE.

Dear all:

I am terribly saddened to deliver the news to you that our dear Bobby Model
passed away yesterday. I do not have any details yet from the family,

As you know, Bobby first came to NG when he was part of the team that
climbed Trango Tower in autumn 1995, a feat which was featured in the April
1996 NGM, and Bobby appeared on the cover of that issue. Images that Bobby
shot on that expedition were published in the magazine. While Bobby
continued to climb at an extremely high level, upon the urging of his
climbing partner, Todd Skinner, he pursued a career in photography, and
went on to cover relief work in Sudan, the Balti peoples in Pakistan, and
other topics in Africa while he was based in Nairobi. He shot articles for
NG Adventure, and worked with David Harvey on his coverage of Nairobi for
the NGM Africa issue.

When Bobby was injured outside of Capetown in June two years ago, he was
miraculously able to survive what would have been for most a fatal head
injury. He struggled through a host of extremely challenging medical issues
in the coming months at Mt. Sinai hospital in New York, and then at Craig
Hospital in Denver, which specializes in brain and spinal cord injuries. He
was released from Craig to home care almost a year ago, and has been living
in Cody, Wyoming, where his mother, father and sister reside.

No question Bobby was one of the most outstanding individuals with whom
I've worked in all my years here at National Geographic. For all of his
talent, he was incredibly modest, and unusually thoughtful about how he
approached anything in life. An incredible athlete, a talented
photographer, and, he was, by all accounts, one the nicest guys you'd meet
anywhere.

Bobby valued his relationship with National Geographic tremendously, and
was honored to be named an Emerging Explorer, and to have received a grant
from the Expeditions Council. When we delivered a signed poster to him from
last year's Explorers Symposium, he had a huge grin on his face, and his
mother said he looked at the poster every day after and it brought a smile
to his face.

We will all miss Bobby, and I will be extending everyone's love and
sympathy to Bobby's family today. Should you wish to write a personal note,
I will be happy to provide you with their contact information.

Bobby lived a jam-packed fun and exciting life, more than anyone I know. From what I saw since he was a kid, he always gave his best and tried his hardest at anything he put his hand to. He excelled at many things, but I think what made him stand out the most was what a good friend he was to everyone and that he really was the life of the party. Bobby, you were truly one of a kind. Thanks for all the good times and there were a lot of them!

Our hearts go out to Faith, Ann, Bob & Jim and the rest of the clan.
