So sorry to hear about your loss. I'll never forget Summit in JT in the winter of 98. God that dog could jump. She was a great companion to you and the JT crew that winter. My wife always asks about the jumping dog called Summit.

I would just like to thank everyone for sharing their thoughts and condolences. This is one of the most difficult days of my life. My house is empty. My heart feels empty. I feel alone. It's difficult to function right now.
But I want you all to know I find great comfort in your words, thoughts, prayers, poems. The poem that guido posted made me cry but it also made me realize something. I don't want to forget her and I don't want to put it out of my memory. Not now - not ever.
I am burning a candle for her on my puja. A new friend from my Anusara Immersion brought me flowers yesterday - white roses. I took one from the vase and laid it on the floor where Summit passed. I had stashed her collar but after reading guido's post I found it again and also laid that on my puja.
the reverend started a thread about gathering the tribe. Please.... let's make this happen. Let's make it happen to honor all that we've let go of. But let's make it happen to try to remember the promise of a new day.
please...
love,
~nature

Doug, sorry for your loss.
I had a great dog years ago called" Maya Papaya." Every time we sang "Banks of the Ohio" she would howl. Really funny when we gave her a tennis ball and she would still howl with the ball in her mouth. Why this song out of millions? Her secret.
Here is a photo Steck gave me years ago that says it all. John Salathe and his best friend.

Condolences Doug, may Summit rest in peace.
Having grown up with a number of dogs and cats, I know how tough it is to have to let a pet go.
If I may be allowed here is a story...
My last dog Ci (border collie & lab mix) was 10-1/2 and showed no signs of age – no greying, hyper, good sight and hearing – but somehow what he did develop was a very rear disease – sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis - that my two vets in Dun Laoghaire as well as all the vets at UCD’s veterinary college had never seen, bar one professor, Chris Bellenger, who said that it was only the third case he had seen in over 35 years working in Australia, the US and Ireland.
They had a team of five surgeons working on Ci but Professor Bellenger said he should stay asleep as there was nothing that could be done and he had been suffering, so I went in to the operating theater where there were two vets left and as he lay on the surgical table I kissed him and then gave the word, he stopped breathing in ten seconds and his EKG flatlined within 15 seconds.
That was May 11 2001 and he was my little boy, I buried him up in the Wicklow mountains at my editor’s (Nick) family cottage overlooking fields and forests very similar to where he was born in north Wales. Nick's dad John and his jack russell Bonnie came along as I was finishing the grave and as John said, "This is a good spot for a dog's spirit to roam".
Ci (pronounced ‘key’, it’s Welsh for dog) was born October 2 1990 in a Welsh village (near Tregarth) that’s name is too long to spell, and I got him when he was five weeks old. He went from Wales to London to California to Ireland with me.
Professor Bellenger gave me a paper from North Carolina’s vet school that featured five case studies of the disease (four dogs and a cat). Interestingly it is most common in adolescent girls of Polynesian heritage. Weird eh?
Again my condolences about Summit.

What a beautiful life... thanks for sharing a bit of Summit's with us. Her spirit will stick around as long as she is needed. My mother-in-law had a lab/cocker spaniel mix, Sophie, who was just the dearest thing. Even the vet cried when he put her down! I'm sure Summit will be keeping an eye out for you too.
The wheel keeps turning, the cycle continues... all is as it should be.
Peace and blessings to you Doug.

Doug, so sorry to hear about Summit. Man, what a lucky friend to have found you... I remember after my Wolf/Malemute mix passed, I could not go to my house, too quiet, too empty.
Its too tough for me to even read the great responses in this thread, and there are some great ones. My 10 year old german shepard is fighting the losing battle of degenerative myelopathy right now, and my eyes fill with tears over the loss of another good friend. F$%#
Thanks for being so cool with our four legged friends Nature. Do it for another when the time is right. And thanks for all the Summit/Nature TRs. Best, Robert

Nothing makes it any easier. The comfort of good friends is about the best you can hope for. I'm sorry you're going through this, and I know may of us understand the loss and grief you're experiencing. Grieving sucks. I wish I had some words of wisdom, but I don't. My heart goes out to you, bro.

Peace be with you Doug. I know how hard this time is.
She left you with so many memories- those alone will make you smile.
We love our damn dogs so much- they just don't live long enough.
I'm so sad bro, but my memories of her make me happy again.
rest in peace old gal

Sorry Doug, I had to put Emma (Border Collie , cattle dawg mix) Down 3 weeks ago (Pancreatic cancer). Knott much hurts as bad as losing your best friend. Take care Bro, time (albeit slowly) heals all wounds, I'm walkin and talkin proof.
Since then I've rescued another aussie from Nor cal Aussie rescue and am starting her on obedience training this Thursday.
