High Alt work, lighter-faster, flatter profile to drop onto...of course, if you're just going to the store for a beer...

No doubt the Remington 870 is a great home defense weapon. However, there is a reason big game guides and fisheries officers carry a hand cannon in the brush. A long gun is just too awkward when a mad grizz comes bolting through the brush. I felt absolutely naked on my 3 trips to BC with a damn bell on my pack. My buddy Paul [a fisheries officer] always carried a Super Blackhawk .44 along with his shotgun. He also had to keep his dogs in iron cages, for their own safety.

Real men use bows and arrows. A gun is like bolting your way up el cap; all the action for no lasting glory.

Get me a dress then. I can't imagine using a bow on a charging 1200 pound grizzly.

Hey look, although it sounds like a nightmare to me, the question was if you could only have ONE.

With, literally, over a hundred distinctly different types of ammunition the 12 bore offers more versatility and alternate configurations and barrel types than any other weapon system.

Thankfully it is not (yet!) a decision I need worry about, but as much as I love my HKs, a 9mm is a poor choice for a big brown sow who's quality maternity time I unwittingly interrupted.

The .44mag is a great choice there, but why a single action? My Dan Wesson or my S&W not only unloads faster, but does the same for RELOADING.

As much as I love my Super Blackhawk as well, for some reason my speedloaders don't work! LOL

Thing to do is pair a 228 with a 239; as above, similar operating systems.

My buddy Paul [a fisheries officer] always carried a Super Blackhawk .44 along with his shotgun.

My ex-bro-in-law carries one in .45LC, but, he's a throw back for sure. His main huntin' rifle is a lever action 45/70 with iron sights for everything in AK. Not that I don't mind plinkin' with one (mines 7.5", chromed, ported, TSOB scope mount, overhauled by SSK). Doesn't hardly kick. Smooth. Fun.

http://www.sskindustries.com/handgun.htm

Having carried a bit up in AK in the bush (Kodiak, POW, the ABC islands, Brooks Range, etc), make mine a double action S&W or Ruger Redhawk in .44mag minimum, Garrett Cartridges on the inside. That's if I had to have a revolver. First choice would be a 12 gauge.

I just think a single action army style revolver wouldn't work well for most folks if you had to use it against a large critter bent on your destruction. Fish and Game in AK carry 12 gauges or .375 H&H rifles, last I checked (and based on their cache in the cabin I, uhh, investigated).

Pretty gripping bear stuff in "The Year Long Day" by Ivar Ruud. Chronicles a year of hunting polar bears in the arctic. The part where the bear breaks into the cabin, and, he's stuck inside his sleeping bag (string tied on the outside to keep it closed up due to extreme cold) is both funny, and frightening.

Yeah, Ruger fan here too. First rifle as a child was an M77 in '06. Fond of the SP101 (once a took I stone to it and removed the sharp burrs). They hit it out of the park with the 10-22 and their Mark I, II and III series of .22 autos.

Might be covetting a Redhawk in .454 Casull...hmm....

Hey Ron,

We'll be getting into Vegas this Saturday and staying until late Friday night, 1 AM. Looks like Crimpie will be showing up on Tuesday but has opted for a room at the Rio, sort of Wimpy there Crimpie... Riley arrives on Wednesday, we are heading for Epi on Thursday AM. Ninfa will be in town on Monday. That’s all I know!

Gotta admit, the Redhawk is the way to go. I just happen to own a single action.

I learned a lot with a single action and feel pretty confident, but a double is all that and more, so if you can afford one...

Like I said, that gate slows down loading.
Oh sure, I have seen pros whip through that cylinder, but there is sport and then there is sport.

As for .45-70, I'm no two faced poseur. Mine have real barrels, but the one that I bought from Mike Baker's estate is too pretty (wood case and high end engraving and stunning burl walnut) to actually carry in the bush.

I was at the range this afternoon, no wind, no clouds and high 70s.
Cranked off over 500 rounds, but near the start I "evicted" a bozo after he muzzle swept me a THIRD time only 2 seconds after I asked him not to. Walked right up to him with my hand resting on my Les Baer and suggested he might want to pack it in for the day.
After he left another shooter (who I had seen the bozo also sweep) came up and thanked me.

I told him that the guy was just a bozo, but if he had done it with attitude that there would have been a second gunshot death in the county this week.

After he saw me shoot the TR he just smiled.

Wimpy? Haha! This wimpy girl and Dave will be climbing sharp edges on vertical faces in the sun during the day, hanging with friends at the campground in the evening, and capping the night off in a hottub at the Rio.

(See you at the Rio Prod - haha).

I guess you don't want to hear the story of the couple that filled the hot tub, got in with nothing but their wine glasses, and turned on the jets only to have some kind of brown scum come gushing out,..

Just bought a HK P200SK for off-duty carry. I have to spend some more time on the range getting used to it, but I like it so far.

I read up on the .327 mag today.

BITD Charter Arms Bulldog was the CQB end gamer.
Looks like they are out to slam the .40 contenders in an attempt to regain position.
I like that the .32 H&R serves as the "special".

Back when the Clintons were making sure that the citizens would run dry before the criminals (as in ten rounders) I thought that a slimmed down 1911 ten shot in a new .32 auto-mag might be in the offing, but ironically the 5 shot Bulldog surrogate might offer very similar ballistics.

It is remarkable if not entirely surprising, given the swings of political climate, how dynamic the firearms industry has remained for well more than a century.

Anybody up on caseless ammo? (hardly a new idea).

I just got a ruger .44 carbine with a bushnell 4x-12x scope... but I have yet to shoot it. I have no experience with ruger up to this point, I just figure that german engineering has to count for something and the price is right. Its nice to hear they make good stuff...

I started shooting the .32 H&R mag back when it came out. I found a Blackhawk with a 4 5/8" barrel and it is fun for plinking. I was somewhat disappointed with it's limitations for reloading. The pressure limits were too low. It looks like the .327 mag has a bit more potential in that respect. I liked your idea of a large cap. wheelgun, say a S&W with 8 shots in a medium frame. I hope more companies start using this caliber. I'm thinking a Contender G-2 custom carbine from Bullberry in .327 mag would make a fine squirrel gun.

I was just discussing that very point you made about the American firearms industry. Maybe it's because they generally make quality products and innovate to meet consumer desires. The Auto industry could learn from them.

I found that article in a recent AR about caseless ammo interesting. What would that forebode for reloaders?
