Kitty's one.
Catherine Destivelle absolutely.
I've always been blown away by what a well rounded climber Alison Sheets is, besides hard rock, big-walls, and major desert FAs, Alison is skilled on ice and snow as well.
She guided for Donahue in Rocky Mountain.
I have yet to see the video she did with Allison Hargreaves.
But the truth is that there is tons of talent you never hear about. Not everyone plays the self-promotion game.
Nor should they.
Chances are that many of the best are virtually unknown.

To add to Nate's excellent list of top living women mountaineers - a few current Himalaya climbers:
Nives Meroi
Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner
Edume Passiban
Daniele Bernasconi
Not sure I got all the name spelling correct. No real opinion of who is in the top ten. Wanda R was amazing.

Admittedly, I don't know much about female mountaineers, but I do know that Lynn Hill expressly ISN'T one. She's said herself she hates the cold/high altitude stuff and tries to stay out of it as much as she can. It isn't for her.

For "mountaineers" (vs. say "alpinists") then the simplest standard is the number of 8000m peaks they have done.
So #310/Kathy's list is best.
Nives MEROI and Gerlinde KALTENBRUNNER with 10 each, then Edurne PASABAN with 9. MEROI and PASABAN have both done K2.

I've climbed with, ( and had the respectful pleasure) in the early eighties of climbing with a women that use to blow me away. I could lead easy .11,s and she could follow anything I made it up.
In the big hills, mountaineering she was unstoppable. She drug my sorry ass up so many of CA'S 14k,s that I can't recall..
Her name was Christy Tewes, she was on the Women's Annapurna expedition (as base camp manager) that wrote the book a women's Place Was on Top.
She also was a contemporary of Warren Harding and was on many adventures with him including the ascent of that roue over by the Yosemite falls where everyone is credited with et. al. to save Warrens marriage.
She was so hardcore that as a boxer and serious weight lifter, back then she would continually Kick my ass.
We shared so many summits and special times in the mountains, Thank you Christy.
Sex has NO difference in the hills, it's all HEART! She had it in Spades.
