I have been having a debate with a friend here in the UK about the top ten living women mountaineers. Just wondered what everyone else's thoughts are?

Also I am trying to find out what expeditions women climbers are going on at the moment. Can anyone suggest if there is a site that might have this information? I have some from a google search but wondered if there is a designated site.

top 10 women currently or is this still the top 10 of all time ukclimbing thread?

alpinism isn't supertopo's strong suit. cascadeclimbers.com would probably give you a better response rate. summitpost.org is mostly peakbaggers, but also worth a try.

although she isn't doing a lot of big peaks yet, i'm really impressed by ines papert. she wouldn't be top ten, but she probably will be, if she decides to leave the comp and roadside circuit.

If you're talking about all-time, then Fanny Bullock Workman pretty much has to be on the list.

Thanks for this. Yes I live in the UK but have climbed in the US quite a bit in the past. I this site only for US climbers?

I met a friend from the boards for lunch and he suggested that someone in this chat room might know.

hope that is ok.

supertopo can get a bit inbred sometimes, what with all the middle-aged californians posting here, so brits are always welcome.

Sorry - I didn't realise is it not possible to talk on these boards if you do not live in the States? I climbed there quite a bit some time ago. Does that count?

I am really interested to hear what people think but don't want to offend anyone.

When you say mountaineers, you mean stepping on snow is a requirement, I guess. In the order they pop into my head:

Lynn Hill
Steph Davis
Catherine Destivel
Josune Be..... (I live in Spain, and I still can't spell it!) She has done the Naranjo de Bulnes, which is definitely a mountain.
Silvia Vidal

The requirement of being living rules out Wanda Rutkiewicz (sp?), who would otherwise get my vote for #1.

By the way, you should definitely not get offended, even though it might seem like you should.

welcome to Taco; ignore the nay-sayers. ha

you said mountaineers. sad fact is I don't know the name of a single serious female mountaineer/alpinist. I know there are some out there but you don't hear much about them, or I'm not paying attention?

Seriously... That list, mcreel... I'm not sure any of those chicks qualify as a mountaineer. Not in the traditional sense, anyhow.

Not full time, I agree, except for Wanda R., but they have done some pretty amazing mountaineering. It's just that their rock climbing eclipses the mountaineering. But how many male mountaineers do you know who have soloed the Dru in winter? Or done a new route solo on Shipton Spire?

Catherine Destivelle definitely belongs on a list of top women mountaineers of the last century. The North Face of the Matterhorn, solo, is an impressive accomplishment from someone whose early work was in crag climbing. But it depends on how much weight you wish to give to high-altitude climbing versus technical and classic routes in the Alps.

What's the name of that sassy little gal who has pulled off some big Patagonian stuff lately. I saw a mean photo of her with a bloody forehead and cracked helmet on Fitzroy or something. She looks tough as nails and kinda below the radar. Krystal something? Maybe a hyphenated last name?

Too me, the OP is directing a querry which leans toward high altitude mountaineering (having also asked about current expeditions).

Agreed, this is not the strong suit of Supertopo, but we have a few regulars who could have a decent say (Jello?).

Of our climber/alpinist compatriots stateside, I'd say Kitty Calhoun for sure.

Mountaineering is such a vague term...it seems like women tend to specialize, where mountaineering is an "all-rounder" sort of gig.

This isn't a "best ever list", but a list of folks who get after it up in the alpine.

Kitty's one.

Catherine Destivelle absolutely.

I've always been blown away by what a well rounded climber Alison Sheets is, besides hard rock, big-walls, and major desert FAs, Alison is skilled on ice and snow as well.
She guided for Donahue in Rocky Mountain.
I have yet to see the video she did with Allison Hargreaves.

But the truth is that there is tons of talent you never hear about. Not everyone plays the self-promotion game.
Nor should they.

Chances are that many of the best are virtually unknown.

To add to Nate's excellent list of top living women mountaineers - a few current Himalaya climbers:
Nives Meroi
Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner
Edume Passiban
Daniele Bernasconi

Not sure I got all the name spelling correct. No real opinion of who is in the top ten. Wanda R was amazing.

Admittedly, I don't know much about female mountaineers, but I do know that Lynn Hill expressly ISN'T one. She's said herself she hates the cold/high altitude stuff and tries to stay out of it as much as she can. It isn't for her.

For "mountaineers" (vs. say "alpinists") then the simplest standard is the number of 8000m peaks they have done.
So #310/Kathy's list is best.

Nives MEROI and Gerlinde KALTENBRUNNER with 10 each, then Edurne PASABAN with 9. MEROI and PASABAN have both done K2.

I've climbed with, ( and had the respectful pleasure) in the early eighties of climbing with a women that use to blow me away. I could lead easy .11,s and she could follow anything I made it up.
In the big hills, mountaineering she was unstoppable. She drug my sorry ass up so many of CA'S 14k,s that I can't recall..
Her name was Christy Tewes, she was on the Women's Annapurna expedition (as base camp manager) that wrote the book a women's Place Was on Top.

She also was a contemporary of Warren Harding and was on many adventures with him including the ascent of that roue over by the Yosemite falls where everyone is credited with et. al. to save Warrens marriage.
She was so hardcore that as a boxer and serious weight lifter, back then she would continually Kick my ass.
We shared so many summits and special times in the mountains, Thank you Christy.
Sex has NO difference in the hills, it's all HEART! She had it in Spades.

Julie Brugger and Andy DeKlerk's ascent of the Moonflower was the routes 3rd ascent. Together they also climbed the Cassin, the north face of Alberta (probably the 4th or 5th ascent of that route), and Cerro Torre to the true summit- and if I recall all four of those ascents occurred in less than two years. This was around 1993 I think.
