The images are going to be a huge loss. The ability to post images is what made this place.

I get they’re freaked out in the middle of a legal matter and are playing it super safe - but I hope all this has been archived for restoration at a later date when sanity prevails.

Thank you Happiegirl. As one who will not touch Facebook, I have signed on to your new forum--after going through the 'maze' required to register!!!I hope many other 'campfire' regulars and lurkers do the same. Good luck.

Was it really difficult? Being the admin, maybe I didn't notice, but I did sign up as myself(well, Happiegrrrl) along with admin.... It asked for birthday and a Robot check, but that's not so unusual in a platform trying to defend against bots.

So do I. I am more inclined to sign up on this as opposed to an fb group.

I remember first hearing about this site from Dick Cillie in 2006. My first time on, there happened to be a thread, with pictures, of course, about the Lost Arrow Chimney. I'd never even really seen a picture of it other than what was in the old (green) Roper Guidebook. So, my first post was to this thread about how I had soloed it (with a point of self-belay) in 1978. I had never told the story before except to my friends.

This little story is just one of thousands that have been told here that are not in traditional print. I believe that my next post (I know I could look but I'm lazy) was a TR with pictures from bouldering at Mt. Woodson, my home bouldering area, around Christmas 2006. That thread ended up connecting a lot of climbers who had a love for Mt. Woodson, including, notably, Bvb and Brunosafari. Ultimately, that thread led to the first Woodson Shindig in 2007. Those early years were so fun for me.

Another highlight for me was my Road to Lucille thread. That was particularly fun, as, it seemed, a bunch of you played along. It was the only time I ever put myself out there as an entertainer to an audience I didn't know.

Most importantly, this site was instrumental with me hooking up with Jaybro, Tarbuster, Em, Brassnuts, CrimperGirl, Prod, Taco Bill, Ed Hartouni, Gal, Crusher, Scuffy, Mike Friedrichs, Nature, Aya, Jello, Connie, Rob Dillon, Locker, Blitzo, Goatboy, Jan, Roger and many others.

More recently, for good or bad, I've been obsessed with the What is Mind? question. It's been fun bantering with the likes of Largo, Ed, JoGill, MH2, healyje, HFCS, MikeL, DMT, Jan, MB1, and the rest. I'm feeling like I'm only months away from solving this sucker:)

Special call-out to Malemute, who provided an extremely valuable service in compiling a huge list of climate change links.

Thanks Chris!

Still wondering how you got down.

Okay. Found the first post, from 2007. Now I know. Now ST can die.

This is kind of like the end of High School, no pun intended.

Many of us are going to disband with the centrifugal force that happens at a similar change of life node in the grand scheme of things.

We need a yearbook!

Funny thing is, when I got onto Supertopo, that was essentially my high school reunion, because all of my friends during my high school years were actually climbers out at the crags, and not at school at all. When I created the Tarbuster avatar, my mother asked me if I wanted my actual junior high and high school yearbooks, and I said: "Just toss them. I'm having my high school reunion right now online, mom."

And now, for most intents and purposes, this yearbook is getting tossed!

I know it will still be here in text-only format, which is great for reading and researching, but without the pictures, I think you get the picture.

Bon voyage, all!

ST is not found on the way back machine currently, I doubt a text only version will exist.

wilbeer:

I think they disallowed it on the way back machine to remove any records of copyright infringement.
From what RJ/CMAC have said, they'll just continue to host the forum here, in a frozen state, with no pictures.

They haven't answered our question as to whether it will be searchable, but I don't see why they would disable that function if they are going to leave the forum in total here as an archive.
