So you think it best he abandon a healthy passion?

I know how I was when I was getting sober, and I wouldn't have done well to just hit the road and cruise to the valley.

Agreed.

An alternative to AA is SMART Recovery. AA did not work for me. Sitting in meetings listening to people tell their life story was pointless as I have lived it. It was like an episode of "Scared Straight".

SMART did.

Good luck Brandon.

If your travels bring you to Ireland, you have a place to stay in Wexford, as I do not foresee any return for me to the States. I like it here, though I miss California and the climbing.

Email me and I will give you the details. I have a guest bedroom (two actually, counting the loft) and Ballytrent Beach is 70 meters away. No good climbing nearby though, that is sort of a bummer.

In fact, if any Supertopian is in Ireland, look me up. You are welcome in my abode, just no politics, no religion and keep your farts to yourself, hah hah.

Best wishes Brandon and all

Ian has a lot of good points. Sugar coating things won't help. I just disagree that all climbers are drunk dopers. Choose who one hangs around with.

Hey Johntp, sorry to have to cut that conversation short. My neighbor brought over groceries, we are a tight bunch here. Email me your info and maybe we can make conversation easier via messenger. The dog eating the phone really sucked. You’re a good friend, thanks!

It's true that a good number of climbers at LEAST like to have an after-climbing cold beer.

Which is not a big deal, if you're not a newly sober person who's not had enough experience to know if they can be around that without slipping.

Also, I have found that there ARE people who danged well knew I was sober, and still tried to cajole me into drinking with them I had one guy tell me he was gifted at Xmas with this "homemade juice" and would I like some?

He outright denied it was an alcoholic beverage. "Just a sip! Just try it!" he kept saying.

Those who are problem drinkers are very unlikely to support a non-drinkers desire to stay sober. They just aren't going to sT "Dude, you've got 3 month! Don't throw that away just to have a warm can of beer with us."

Lost my job as well. Well, if I finish the twelve steps, my boss says we could talk. Car is in the shop and can’t be retrieved until I pay the bill. Can’t pay the bill. Out of coins to cash in at the bank, so I just had to borrow twenty bucks from an old employer just to buy groceries. Heating oil is about to run out, not sure how I’m going to take care of that one. Net worth is literally just that of all my outdoors toys, carpentry tools, clothes, and yard power tools. More poor than I’ve ever been

But I mean this in all seriousness, I’m f*#king stoked to be sober. It may suck right now, but I’m a white guy in the usa, I’m not going to die because of these hardships. Things can only get better!

Dang, that's a harsh place. Don't drink, no matter what! I've heard stories from people in harsher spots, Brandon, and if they can do it, you can do it!

Seriously, get your butt down to social services tomorrow. Get all the assistance available. It's important you have food and there may be fuel assistance. Some states won't allow heat turned off in winter, but not sure how that works. Definitely don't let the people who are making sport of your deal here on ST get in your head. FK them, arrogant bastards.

By the way, nice knife handles, DJ. Do you make the blades?

Right, what happens if you look for good advice on a real life issue on Supertopo and you find it here?! Just how f*#ked up is your worldview gonna be then?

It might be that the folks who think they’re healthy are looking for an escape by posting to Supertopo.

Sorry Brandon, wish I could be more help, but you’re gonna have to do the heavy lifting yourself, as I expect you already know. Wishing you well!

Brandon, I hesitated to post here because of the bashing etc., but Happiegrrril is sending you on a good path. I know you have talked to Dean R. and he also has your very best at heart. He would be such a great mentor for you! I also have you in my heart. I have posted for @ 10 years here on ST about my struggles losing my husband. Along with that I have posted many comments about jesus being my best friend. He has been my best friend since I was in my early 20's. He pretty much saved me from dying in a gutter due to the party life. Brandon, jesus is real. He is the God that created you and He most assuredly has a Great plan for your life. Trust Him, He will never leave you and He will be show you the way. Hugs, lynnie

I’m with FlipFlop. I got this from Brandon- outta the blue. Nice guy.
He’s the “Truman Show” of ST; you can watch his whole life unfold on the internet.
