Lol, I am a gentle guy. I left rehab because I was having hallucinations. Five days of them. I was just thinking about a pistol beause I’d be living out of the car from time to time nd have experienced more crimem out west than where I live. I’d rather give Llama my pistol and have her shoot me in the f*#king head than use it on her or myself. Regardless, I’m going to bail on the gun thing, I’ve nev3r owned one before, so I’m sure I’ll be just fine without one now. Looking at working here for a couple of months. Can put some loot away, do maintenance on the home, then airbnb the place for k a weekend. Yes please, I can camp one weekend a year?

Edit, Don Paul, I left for reasons that I’m not really comfortable posting on a public forum. I’d be happy to tell you what’s up. Message me at btmayo79 at the gmail.

That's a relief. Good luck out west.

Brandon, I'm glad you'll be working in your area for a few months and aren't making any sudden changes or going on a road trip in the middle of winter. If you want to stay sober, and I hope you do, it may help if you have support and a strategy. How do you feel about AA? It's likely that they can help. Or are there other sorts of support groups in your area?

I'm sorry your wife has left you -- sounds very painful. Maybe you can work things out, or maybe it wasn't meant to be. You probably know better than us why she left -- whether it was because of your alcoholism, because you left the rehab program, or even because she's having a hard time adjusting to your being sober.

Actually Brandon, stay right there where you are. You described it and doesn't sound like there's anything wrong with it. Stop running from yourself just stay and work on YOU. You have to take YOU with you, where ever you go so you gotta learn to make that work first.

Then go on your long road trips out west.

I have to agree with Arne. Seems more productive in the long run to repair any broken local relationships and build on the good ones.

My final 2 cents. Dogs do a better job of protecting us, maybe protecting us from ourselves too. Let me know if you are still considering CA.

Uh IJ is correct eg lots of drug use in climbing and construction and health industry and, well, everywhere.

Take IJ's advice--- it's the hardest climb in your life and it will kick your ass.

I'm going to mostly agree with Ian.

I'm glad that you decided to at least stay put for two months and work. You told me that your boss is a former alcoholic who goes to AA and that he runs a dry crew. Not sure how it could be dry if you were working for him before you went to rehab, . but if its mostly dry and you weren't drinking around the other guys, then fair enough.

I don't know you well enough to know if this is you, but something to think about is that alcohol is often used as a form of escape. Hitting the road is also a form of escape. Sometimes its the only thing that we can do, but if your work crew really is sober, then I would hope that you would consider staying put and working on your own mental, physical and financial health.

The best way to attract a reasonably stable woman into your life is to be reasonably stable yourself. Some women are attracted to the bad boys, but that usually doesn't last. You don't have to entirely stomp out the wild streak in yourself. You need to learn how to harness it so that it helps you rather then hurts you.

I'm hoping the best for you Brandon.

I know its harsh, but I agree with Ian Jewel to a point. I know that Brandon isn't relying solely on ST, but yeah...anyone saying "You're good, don't worry, come to (climbing area) may not have experience with recovering from years of active alcoholism.

I think Brandon has made a great choice in staying put for a little bit. That's not f'd up thinking at all. GOOD DECISION.

Don't drink today. The rest will take care of itself.

that Ian Jewell post is as good as you will hear it.

YOU will not get out of this situation, because YOU are the overlap of all the elements that made it happen.
the guy that will get over this isnt YOU, its some other guy, and you need to be him instead. but so long as you keep the same old triggers, the same old reasoning, the same old logic, the same old environment you cant be that guy.
that guy is somewhere else, doing something else, for other reasons.

expect changes in yourself directly proportional to the changes you actually make.

i wont win friends with this but, personally i dont have an issue with the gun thing if, and ONLY if, you go and properly train for it first BEFORE you even consider owning one. go thru the process, the discipline, the difficulties, the minutia and the feedback of becoming seriously proficient, use the process to rewrite your head. its a lot more subtle and comples than you may imagine. understand the gravity and responsibility and extrapolate it.

and you should still go to india.

I am a lefty, and I just got back from an eight mile trail run. Kicked my ass, but I needed it. Just pushing through the hard times with a little masochism. Only averaged 8.5 min/miles, but the pain was good. DT’s sucked big time, that’s why exercise is helping so much. You can think what you want of me, but I’m not a person with such a huge ego that he would start a thread about himself that was predicated upon lies. If you son’t beliefe that, then I guess I’ve got nothing left to speak to you about.

Haven’t yet read the long post that everyone is complememting. Need to take a shower and feed the animals. I’m sure there’s some solid wisdom in there, so, thanks.

If you are having DT's and hallucinations, you have not been through detox? This raises a few questions.

I'm not much in agreement with Ian. Many who have posted have gone through it and are offering input from their experience. We aren't trying to be arm chair shrinks. Just sharing what we have experienced.

Generally speaking, if you are struggling with alcoholism, stay the f*#k away from rock climbers entirely.

Then why are you here? Plenty of climbers live healthy lives. As with all of society, one has a choice in the type of people they hang around.
