Moose Jaw used to have the world's largest moose statue until a Norwegian town erected a larger one.

"Ottawa’s decision to detain Huawei executive Sabrina Meng Wanzhou and accept Saudi teenage political refugee Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun are both examples of a deep-seated impulse to do the right thing even if it means facing unpleasant consequences."

Cases of Sabrina Meng Wanzhou and Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun should not be bundled together because they are of totally different nature.

In case of low profile Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun it was a trade off between progressive values and irritating Saudis.
Apparently the risk was not that high.

In case of high rank Huawei executive it was a trade off between following orders from Washington, DC and irritating Chinese.
As a Canadian patriot, Trudeau needed:
to follow American orders (otherwise Canada/Canadians may be punished by the US)
not to irritate Chinese (otherwise Canada/Canadians may be punished by the China)

It was an interesting challenge and Trudeau failed to find a proper solution because he was not smart enough.
For example Trump told that he was not told about this case in advance, while Trudeau told that he was informed but made a political decision to comply with American request.
Here I am not talking about progressive smart, but about street smart.

Any teenager from a rough neighborhood would have figured out that the only proper response should have been a discreet communication with Chinese about American request.

SNC-Lavalin case generated a lot of noise, but in reality nothing serious has happened. It looks like it's used to make sure that Trudeau is not reelected in October.

On the other hand Meng Wanzhou's case has not been resolved yet.
As a retaliation and a way to apply pressure, every few weeks Chinese arrest one or two Canadians with apparently made up excuses.

The mood here, from what I see, is let's see what the deal is with SNC Lavelin. It doesn't seem to be too bad, but why is Trudeau playing so coy? I sure hope it doesn't take him out like Martin got hosed by the sponsorship scandal.

Back to culture -- I don't know if this made it south of the border, but in the 90's Bruce Macdonald made a string of road movies that were big for kids in my generation: "Road Kill", "Highway 61", "Dance Me Outside", "Hard Core Logo".

I believe that the Canadians' inherent fear of the dark has had positive effects in the snowbird communities of America.

It seemed inevitable that we would need to invade Canadia until the admirable performance of those Canadian teenagers at the ski area rescue. More study is necessary.

Well Jim, I can dig a higher ethical standard. I would hope it doesn't run too deep. Butts throwing in the towel makes me very nervous.
