I can't comment on who is or is not a kook but I don't care what you do in your own time. If you're happy to get some interesting climbing in and willing to take a bit of a newbie on I'm there!

Boy drama? Pfft. My very first JT trip had us pull in to the lot and as we were necking around looking at the various lines and climbing potential in wonder and excitement, right there witnessed some jackass draw a gun on another jackass @30 feet away and then they started yelling at each other. I've drawn down on dudes before, and they always do what ya tell them, but what I found both fascinating and unnerving is that the unarmed fella was screaming at the top of his voice: "GO AHEAD AND SHOOT YA PUSSY", then he'd take a step forward, the guy with the gun would back up and yell, GET BACK MOTHERF*#KR OR I'LL SHOOT YA or some such and the other shithead would then scream "GO AHEAD AND SHOOT YA PUSSY" again. It was on repeat cycle. From my perspective, I was surprised the the as#@&%e with the gun didn't pull the trigger. I was also considering the point of aim and hoping it didn't change as it was away from us. I didn't get any names although it's possible that one or both of them are currently posting on this thread.
So, my point is this: have fun!

Lizzie welcome to Supertopo! Its like being the new kid at school for a while. We got all kinds. Cool kids, wierdos, bullies, teachers, students, stoners, sportos, drama queens, Young Republicans, Old bitter Democrats, posers, legends and everything in between. I'd say 80% of the posters here are normal folks and the other 20% are downright certifiable.
I hope you find a good partner! I personally have climbed with over a dozen Supertopoans and have met some fantastic friends. Enjoy the Trip Reports, avoid the political threads (its pretty much the same ten dudes bickering back and forth all day) and share the stoke when you report back after an adventure.
