All these threads urging us to buy stuff, have to be put together by some retailing apparachik working in a bull pen. Then a name is chosen for the day's screed.

Why not Bob Splat? Then we would get something out of it all.

You know, John, when arguments are presented for cutting back on non-climbing threads on ST, I think of all this retailing trash that takes up so much space on page one. They are sales pitches IMHO. I prefer the politard threads over this stuff. But maybe others have opinions that differ from mine, since I don't climb anymore.

Edit: OK, so it pays the bills. I guess. Do the owners get compensated?

Isn't Jane Jackson Michael Jackson's sister who got pregnant at 50?

She does seem versatile!

Michael no longer climbs, but is rumored to still moonwalk.

I wonder what kind of shoes he endorses.

I believe that this is what you are getting:

screed:

verb
1.

My wife claims, rightly so, I lack the shopping gene.

I find this criticism devastating as I regularly buy things at Walmart.

I actually read some of those reviews, yesterday, in fact. I find them usually fairly objective but I have taken them to task on a few, as have others. That's what pays for this freak show so if a tent review displaces yer fave bolshie politard rant just remember,

"It's the economy, stoopid!"

hahahahaha...

some folks don't seem to understand the foundation that this place has now settled onto...

if it weren't for the blender reviews, i suspect mcnamara would have long ago deleted this strange city of refuge for the climbing damned...

and if he didn't do it, then spurrier would, in all likelihood, after another repeated late night barrage of emails asking him to "please delete so and so, they are being mean to me", have taken a drill to the servers that the supertopo forum is located on...

no, don't diss the product reviews...

they may very well be the only reason the lights to this place weren't flicked off long ago.

Well, since John Stannard and John Gill had the first two posts on this thread and might check in here again , I thought I would take this opportunity to humbly ask them a question or two. Thread drift,,,

You are known for Foop's and the Thimble but I would be interested to know what you each think , your best, most rewarding, climbing experience was?
Perhaps the one's above?

And what was the most desperate situation you were ever in.

Never met either of you but much respect.

I notice Jane Jackson no longer seems to be with us.

"Best" and "rewarding" can be interpreted in various ways. I can tell you that the very modest solo climbing I did during my 60s was the most enjoyable of my entire life.

Jane Jackson has just climbed back up on top and I therefore surmise she exists.

We have shoes to thank for DMT?

But back on topic.

1. Can't find Jane anywhere now.
2. All the gear reviews show a posting time of midnight tonight.
3. Except for a couple with Spurrier as coauthor, the reviews seem not to show authors now.

This whole thing does not mean a great deal IMHO. So I seem to be beating a dead horse. But clearly it meant something to someone. Odd. Giving due consideration to what Yvon says has always been a good option. From what I have seen picking up trash, I think Yvon is right to say we spend totally unreasonable amounts on clothes and other gear. That's all.

I'll try answering John Hansen's questions. I accept the idea that any answers I give are unremarkable. I took up climbing to find the line between what I could do and what I could not do. And because when climbing rock created by nature we are as far away as it is possible to get from being told what to do by some other human. (Please note that piton damage and bolts all tend to turn natural challenges into human directed challenges.)

Two climbing experiences I had were memorable because I succeeded where I knew I had no business succeeding.

1. Rich Goldstone and I were working on a Gill problem at the Gunks called the Whale. There was no reason for me to work on a Gill problem but Rich was there so I had to try. Beats me how I got up it.

2. After Henry gave me the three secrets to climbing O/W I tried Ahab as my first O/W. Getting up it was so unexpected I was jazzed. So jazzed Bridwell remarked, "You seem pretty excited." Never tried a second O/W because I got into something much more exciting than climbing about that time.

A story I enjoy telling........over and over again.

Several of us were walking down to Skytop when Greg Hand asked me how to do O/W. I told him Henry had given me the secret rules. I told him Henry had said:
1. Back to the ground
2. Face the offset
3. Stand up on the inside foot

Greg then asked, "John? Why is everyone laughing?"

In life one does only a few things right. Climbing was one of them.

I don't know about Jane Jackson.

But it's funny you should bring this up, jstan.

Why, just the other day on The Flames, I posted this.

I know you're not doggin' me, but this is odd, nonetheless.

Susan's a styler, you can tell. Keep it basic.

And MH, Shcrodinger's is full of schlock from China so I never shop there.

The sales people are all so catty, too.
