This appears to be attack on someone you don't know. (maybe I'm reading the tone wrong)

Why are you going after someone you don't know anything about? Someone who is a part of the climbing community.

I've often thought the multiple gear review posts are annoying, but in general the outdoor gear lab reviews are very helpful when you are in the market for new gear.

If you have a problem with the site content or style you should direct it to the managers of SuperTopo.

Don't slander someone you don't know.

I confess to ignoring a lot on this site, and although I never participate in political or religious threads, they are easy enough to just not click. (Really, try it!)

I used to do the same with the gear reviews, mainly because I wasn't in the market for anything. After carrying 20 year old gear into Crestone Peak this summer, I vowed to update my gear and shave some serious weight, and the gear reviews were a great resource.

I was able to compare prices, weight, and key features, all with real life comments from people who actually used the gear like I want to use the gear. After consulting the gear guide I replaced my air mattress, backpack, approach shoes, rope, and stove, plus added a water filter, lightweight cup, and spork. Nine pounds off my back thanks to the gear guide, and so,far everything has lived up to the reviews.

With all that CMAC has to put up with, and the free reign given us, I'd STFU.

Is it that Jane disrupts our illusion of climbing purity with her insertion of crass commercialism or do you just want her to post a pic of her tits first?

Rich Goldstone and I were working on a Gill problem at the Gunks called the Whale. There was no reason for me to work on a Gill problem but Rich was there so I had to try. Beats me how I got up it.

I could be wrong but I think that was the Gill Egg. I don't think Gill did anything fishy in the Gunks.

What I recall about that day (or perhaps it was another day, a Whale of a day) is that John did it (the Egg not the Whale) and I could not. Had to come back, but on that day I lost it just a bit---maybe what John remembers was the Wail.

Could this be . . .

Renny Jackson's daughter, Jane ?

Looks plausible. If so, my apologies.

That was a good article about old man Jackson and his daughter, Gill.
I also looked up Dan Burgette, the carving ranger, on a whim.

As long as we're getting all commercial here, these creations of his would make excellent gifts.

Gear Lab, to increase it's relevance on ST, needs to look into reviewing medical aids for the infirm.

Right, like best back-country incontinence wear and climbing-signal specific hearing aids.

We wish the Z Flame had different diameter draw cords for the chin and hood so we could operate them more easily.

I've never seen so many gear reviews/product ads clogging the 1st page of the ST forum, as the last couple of days.

Did this thread somehow increase the gear review machine to spew out more reviews/ads?

As a now-retired, long-term outdoor gear rep, I do pay attention to some of the reviews/ads for technical gear I'm familiar with.

In general, the reviewers have no clue what they are talking about, & it is quite likely some companies are paying for favorable reviews.

Just my knowledgeable $00.02 cents.

Those are substantial claims Fritz; I hope you can follow up with actual examples of reviewer ignorance. As for manufacturers paying for good reviews, I'd be interested in how you know about that as well.

OGL isn't consumer reports, but it is usually far better than the other reviewing entities out there, most of whom get their review items for free from the manufacturer and aren't doing any real head-to-head comparisons.

The original OGL review of Totem cams was probably their worst moment. They failed to be consistent with their own standards and seemed to be seriously biased in favor of Camalots. But other reviews I've read since then have seemed to me to be pretty good, and I've made a decision or two based on their conclusions. So if there are reviews I really shouldn't pay any attention to because of a clueless reviewer, I'd like to know about them.

rgold! Thanks for your question/comment.

I worked for many years as the Northern Rockies Representative for Katadyn water filters, which later added Optimus stoves to their product line. I always appreciated & respected the MSR products that we competed with & I still think they are the only other water filter brand that folks can trust. Of course their stoves are very good too.

From 1983- 2005, I worked for tent, pack, sleeping bag, & footwear companies.

I retired from Katadyn in early 2015, so my own views have nothing to do with that company, or my current income.

Katadyn is the most popular outdoor water filter brand & is the industry leader in outdoor water-filters. I do find the Outdoor Gear Lab reviews of water treatment devices to be lacking in science, lacking in real-world field-testing, & quite biased.

I can't show as much personal background for other outdoor gear.

Jane Jackson becomes Ross Robinson in an instant!

How do they do that?
