Can you please quantify what an acceptable number of bad cops is?
How many bad shootings/killings by cops should be accepted?
How many heavy handed crack downs on protests should be accepted?
How many racial profile driven stops should be accepted?
How many times should we accept lies on police reports?

More, a lot more, is, and should be, expected of you when you put on a badge and strap on a gun and swear to preserve the peace. The vast majority of police do a good job, a very few glaringly go wrong and they stand out, and should.
Yes, much more is expected of certain professions, usually ones where peoplse's saftey and well being come into play......airline pilots and doctors come to mind. From pilots we want damn near perfection.

At least with Pilots, they go down with you.
Being an airline pilot was identified as the third most dangerous occupation, btw.
Being a cop wasn't in the top 10 most dangerous jobs.

Nice thought Patrick .....a little too nuanced for some folks here. Actually requires a modicum of thought which is the polar enemy of that most delicious of human emotions....visceral reaction.

There have always been good cops doing a very tough job, with a few bad cops giving all a bad reputation.
Bad cops have been killing inner city citizens, many unarmed, often thugs but too often innocent, for a long time.
Cell phone cameras have brought this reality front and center.
Cops just need to be better than potential perps. That is their job description.
However, today's climate now has something new. I think Jody's approach is a little harsh, but there is a perception that there is a war on cops.
The inflammatory rhetoric coming from some leftist radicals seems to advocate violence against cops.
Here is link talking about a recent Rasmussen poll on this subject. Disagree with Jody's approach on the subject, but his perception is shared by a majority of Americans of all races.

Got no problem with Chippys draining the Calpers bank , but when they start building cat doors and wheel chair ramps without permits , contractor licenses , and engineering , i get all nuanced..

30% less cops have been killed on duty since Obama has taken office compared to Reagan and the 2 Bush's first 6 years
Check the facts before you make outrageous claims

So to say there is a rash is Cop killing is just another political propaganda fear mongering position propagated by right wing media sites hoping to create a buzz

And yet a Cop has more than 20 x the chance of being murdered vs an unarmed Black Person being killed by a Cop, based on Population. Perhaps the emotion engendered on both these issues is over blown in the Media.
"Unarmed black person" is not a profession; you're comparison is invalid.
The profession comparison statistics are not based on the overall population but on the number of deaths per workers in the profession.

Bolded by me.
Add to that a side of "sweeping generalization" and you have a full meal that is impossible for most to resist.

According to the Officer Down website we can currently use a figure of 30 Deaths by Homicide at this given date in a population of full and part time Sworn Law Enforcement Officers of about 800,000. So that works out to be 2.66 per 100,000.
Currently, there have been 61 unarmed blacks killed by Law Enforcement in 2015 according to the Guardian's database. 61 in a Population base of 45,000,000 is .133 per 100,000.
Currently there have been 161 unarmed People killed by Law Enforcement in 2015 in the USA according to the Guardians database. 161 in a population base of 318,000,000 is .0506 per 100,000.
A Law Enforcement Officer in the USA is over 20 times more likely to be murdered than an unarmed Black person is to be killed by Police.
Irrelevant statistics. The numbers you should be looking at are the number of unarmed black folks killed by police vs the number of police killed by unarmed black folks. The problem is that police are treating unarmed black folks (men in particular) as if they present a uniquely mortal threat. How many cops have been killed by unarmed black people?
Furthermore, rather than using total population numbers, you should be looking at the number of citizen fatalities by police vs the number of citizen interactions with police. The vast majority of our population never comes in contact with police officers in their daily lives.

EDIT:
Mr Townsend writes:
"How many cops have been killed by unarmed black people?"
Black or otherwise, the fact that it happens means it's something cops need to watch out for.
How many of those in the unarmed column were killed while trying to arm themselves with a cop's gun? A fight for a cop's gun seems to me to be a fight for the cop's life, so if a cop has to shoot someone to make them stop doing that, then that's what they have to do.
Up in WA, a naked guy killed a cop:
"NEWCASTLE — A veteran King County sheriff’s deputy was killed yesterday when a nude and highly agitated man who’d been running in traffic and pounding on cars took the officer’s gun and shot him repeatedly outside an apartment complex here."
http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=20020623&slug=deputy23m0
I don't know if it was a black guy, or not. That was 2002-BO ( before Obama ), when the race of the participants wasn't important enough to note.
Now, "what race is the guy?" is the first thing everybody wants to know.

"cop killings are down...period."
The reasons seem to be evolving, though.
Why people are killing cops matters more to the non-cop citizen than the numbers of cops being killed.
