They're ALL poseurs compared to The Naked and The Dead.

Fun watch!

Be interesting to hear some of the rest-of-the-story stuff. I wonder how true the editing of the content is to actual events...

Deadman (dead rat!) traps. Pretty effective!

That pile of bananas served them well.

Wow he really knew his stuff compared to a lot of other people on the show. At first I questioned his choice to bring rope, but then quickly redecided it was one of the most useful items anyone could bring given how you can take it apart and use all the inner fibers. Great job surviving. Too bad they couldn't eat the monkeys.

That was awesome. Only lost 6 lbs, that is pretty damn good. Little disappointed he didn't go climbing all day. Ha.

Ha, me too. Looked like some quality bouldering out there.
Looked like a mini vacation for him not an extreme challenge.
I find it hard to believe that he needed an "ocean rescue" at the end there. More likely a bit of drama fodder for the masses. Although, many climbers I know are gripped of the ocean. Be interested to hear about that.

He was the first person I've seen on that show that walked up right, not bent over like they were still trying to hide their man/girl parts. What a cool dude. If I weren't 20 years older than him I'd jump his bones.

I watched that. He only lost 7 pounds. She lost a ton of weight for being a vegetarian. Most of the people who make it on that show basically go without food for three weeks. He was catching a rat an hour. Nobody only loses just 7 pounds.

I gotta try rat. I grew up eating squirrel that my grandpa shot and my grandma cooked. Hell, they are both rodent.

I don't know where to find a rat around here, though. Not a literal rat, anyway.

laughing here.... I love this thread! Partly because, somehow the show got my info from the Moab Film Commission in Oct. of '13 and after a brief phone call decided they wanted me on it. I had never heard of nor seen it - so quickly watched several episodes.

Though never planning to actually end up on it, I decided to follow through at least with the interview (45 min - and they made me change my outfit 4 times before we started the skype process... ugh). Did that, and thankfully could not gather the "b" footage they wanted in the time frame given (one week, during monsoon season here).

Definitely decided that if one is asked to be on such a show, one should try to get on in the first or second season. After that, there's too much emphasis (production-wise) on sensationalism! :)

I watched the episode you are referencing, Jim, and totally agree. That guy nailed it. I personally think they must have made up the whole bit about her needing to rescue him at the end - just to save her a tad bit of dignity..... I hope to meet him passing through Moab one of these days!

Anyhow, fun thread!

Tamara! Thanks for the interesting post. Heidi & I have often wondered how one could be chosen for one of the survival programs.

Darren spent six weeks with me in the Wind Rivers on one of my annual Llama Packing Climbing Fests.

He has the survival/outdoor skills nailed. His presence on the trip was constantly appreciated by everyone. He is a good cook too!

I am not sure whether the sea rescue episode was faked for television. I never heard Darren describe any hip injuries and I think about six weeks I heard a great deal of his biography. Dude likes to talk about himself, for sure. On the other hand, I think he did look a bit gripped during the open water swim and I don't think he has the persona or skill set to fake same. I'll ask him straight out and post the beta.

Darren is a solid climbing technician too, meaning he is solid with the gear and techniques as well as possessing excellent free climbing skills.

I asked Darren to describe his female companion. He gave a basic, biographic recital, consistent with the content on the show. His description was devoid of any survival/wilderness skills so I asked him in follow up. "Sounds like she didn't have any survival skills. Why did the producers pick her?' to which he responded, "Because she was willing to take her clothes off." Now that I've seen the show myself, I think he was telling the truth. She would have sat on that beach and ate nothing for 21 days if left to her own devices. And lost about 25 pounds instead of only 15. What a worthless companion. If they'd been marooned together indefinitely, she would, of necessity, of come around and eaten rats galore. And realized Darren was a godsend.

Now that this thread has thoroughly dissected the episode, I suggest that Donini take up Warbler's conception of the topic for this thread.
