There can be only ONE The Sierra!!!
Bruce, almost, but that can be fixed by a crafty db person, or with the right software, I'd bet.

When going down to LA (if I have to) I always take 5 to 405. Never "The 5" to "The 405". I don't live in The Fresno. Or The California.

What's up with that? Seriously!
I think it's because THE Aliens that landed THE Ark on THE dark side of THE moon ordered Walmart to close six stores in parts of THE southwest. THE aliens are now operating out of THE tunnels under THE Walmarts, and are beaming out signals to confuse you into misusing language.
It's part of their plan to take over THE US through their control of THE Army.

so if we drop the the, and then all that bothersome identifing verbiage that follows it, we'd have a clean slate, quiet and good reason to get back to what we do best: arm waving and finger pointing

Anyone else find hat SoCal affectation of putting "the" in front of highway numbers ie "the ten, dhuuude" insufferably annoying?
I disliked it when I heard as a provincialism in the 70's and dislike it even more now that it is quasiuniversal! The dumbing down of America; we are devo!

Haha I thought about this for quite a bit some time ago. At times it is nicer to leave the THE out because it doesn't go together as well with the name of the formation. Like in "The Fortress - The Siege (IV A1 5.10)" for example. Repeating THE twice doesn't sound right to me, even though it is grammatically correct. :) But it goes well in "El Capitan - The Nose," or "Angel Wings - The Valkyrie."

So what is the rule of grammatical construction that we will all follow in perpetuity?
1. when "I" say so?
2. when emphasis is needed?
3. anytime pretense is needed?
4. when a route has been around long enough to gain classic status?

I remember Ritner Walling telling us stories in the Gunks about his early ascents of "The Jackie" and "The Baby".
We thought it was hilarious that he used "the", but it definitely added to the aura of those intimidating (5.5-5.6)routes...
Does anyone else remember Ritner?

I, too, hate to be picky, but you've forced my hand again...
"The Sierras" is just fine. There are many "Sierras", but you damn ignorant Californians keep thinking the one in your back yard is the only one, and applying your definite article corrections accordingly.
In fact we could even start a list of "the Sierra Nevadas." I've visited two of them, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were more... If you're coming to ignoralifornia to climb then you're likely going to be climbing in the Sierra. You could be at Pinnacles or somewhere else, but you won't be in the Sierras. We know there are other Sierra ranges. That changes nothing about proper grammar or use of language. That's like saying there's lots of Fords so I'm gonna call mine a Mustangs.
