The liquid-in-glass thermometer is the standard used by official climatological observers. Liquid-in-glass thermometers operate on the principle that the volume of the liquid increases as the temperature rises, thus causing the liquid in the tube to expand. As the temperature falls, the liquid in the bulb decreases in volume and the liquid column becomes shorter in most thermometers, the maximum thermometer being the exception.

The maximum thermometer is a mercury-filled thermometer. A maximum thermometer records the highest temperature which has occurred since the maximum thermometer was "reset."

The minimum thermometer is alcohol-filled. The identifying feature of the minimum thermometer is the small dark dumbbell-shaped rod called an index, which is immersed in the alcohol and moves freely through the column (Figure 3-7). As the temperature drops, the index remains at the end of the retreating alcohol column. When the temperature begins to rise, the end of the index farthest from the bulb will indicate the lowest temperature that was reached.

Just Lucky, I Guess

Often on occasion
But more frequently than not
Many more than fewer
And somewhat less than a lot
Things have gone wrong too much
But fortunately for me
It's never been too late
For this blunderer to see

I had a rough night, not sleeping due to breathing problems (choking on obstructive goo brought on by the smoke from wildfires).

Good morning Mouse, zB, DMT, Hooblie, everyone.

First, DMT, on that fishing on the beach photo, I am obviously the short one with the brad-brimmed hat, standing there asking, "What? You want me to do what with that worm!?" Probably why I only fish with dry flies... and great photos from the Chinese.

Mouse, I hope you are feeling better, and that the smoke is clearing. Not being able to breathe due to smoke irritating your lungs sounds very scary. Do you have supplemental oxygen to use when you need it? What you described sounds uncomfortable.

Goddaughter and her husband and their two little girls arrive today. Her dad climbed with Doug in Alaska BITD. She is a mountain girl herself, and I am sure her two girls will have a climbing wall as soon as the younger one is walking. I'm hoping we will go by boat into the Gates of the Mountains while they are here. It's a great place to scramble on some rocks, have a picnic, and go for a hike.

It's still hot here, but nothing like you are having, at least not today. We are only going to have 85F or so today: a cooling trend, loved by all.

Thank you for all the great photos. And the 1956 car ads? Were people that naive to marketing players? I guess we were. I'm not sure we are much more sophisticated these days; we just get slicker packaging around the products, more subtle sales pitches.
:)

Ralph is a mouse who lives in the run-down Mountain View Inn, a battered resort hotel in the Sierra Nevada of California. Ralph longs for a life of danger and speed, wishing to get away from his relatives, who worry about the mice colony being discovered. One day a boy named Keith Gridley and his family visit the hotel on their way through California. Keith leaves a toy motorcycle on his bedside table, While Keith is away, Ralph attempts to ride it, but cannot figure out how to start it. Startled by a telephone ring, both Ralph and the motorcycle fall into a metal wastebasket.

...

After Ralph loses the motorcycle Keith loses trust in him, although he still brings the mice colony food. One night Keith becomes very sick because his parents don't have any more aspirin, nor are able to obtain one until morning. To regain Keith's trust, Ralph searches the hotel for an aspirin tablet, at risk to himself, for the medicine could prove fatal to a small mouse if ingested (in fact, Ralph's father was taken down with a bad cold and died in spite of all they could do). When Ralph is successful, Keith's health is restored. Ralph uses the space under the TV set in the lobby to use as a garage; the motorcycle is his to keep.

New Grass Revival played the first year I attended SBF at Camp Mather. It was the next year that my daughter of 5 attended with me. I heard NGR both times and cannot recall any of the other groups who played, they were that good.

Jeff tired of the scene, pulling a real "local" attitude, labelling bluegrass as 'plinky-plink' stuff.

It was in either '84 or '85 that I first attended the festival, just the two times at Mather, AS IF ANYONE CARES.

For the record, the most-requested song in my head by NGR is [Click to View YouTube Video]Not much to do with banjo.
