Hello,

My local Boy Scout Troop has been given permission to give a rappelling
demo at a local college. All the kids want to take part so it should be
alot
of fun for the parents to watch. The rappell will be down a 150 ft wall.
The kids have to take off their shoes as to not damage some new artwork
halfway down.

The kids will clip into the rope, and climb over a small 3 ft wall to
begin
the rappell. They have all been practicing using the brakes over the
summer,
on our 20 foot practice wall.

We plan to give fireman belays from the ground.

At the planning meeting earlier in the week, one of the parents
was giving us alot of trouble, saying we needed more advice on
how to do the demo.

It seems quite safe to me. I figure once they are on rope, if anything
goes wrong, we can brake them from below.

Any input would be appreciated.

Hey Batten ya old troll haha.

Careful on relying on fireman's brake. During a demo for rappelling at a summer camp in the mid 80's, I and 2 others rapped out of the rafters of a gymnasium. Safety geeks made us have a separate rope belay. We protested as it blew our idea to hide in the rafters and drop the ropes and awe the audience by our sudden appearance. Good idea that belay. Somehow my locker on the Fig-8 came undone midway down the free rap. The belay saved me a crippling fall onto the gym floor. My 8-ring was still midrope as we left the "stage" though few would've even noticed something went wrong. I've respected rappelling ever since.

I know, I know..don't feed the trolls.

Melissa! Good seeing you too. Last I saw you you were on the Column ;)

p.s. Re: The Tuan/Kuan confusion. No, not talking about Tuan. There was a lanky asian guy I used to boulder with at Stoney in the 80s named Kuan. His pic is in the old, old Southern California Climbers Guide.

As a bit of history on rec.clmbing, I was one of several who started that Usenet newsgroup way back in the late 80's. Up to that point, climbing on the internet consisted of an E-mail list run by a guy at Cal Tech (Fritz something). He heavily moderated the stuff that went out on the E-mail list and when he refused to send out a warning on how Metolius P-bolts (remember those?) could cause quick draws to unclip themselves it was time to create an unmoderated newsgroup. The rest, as they say, is history.

Ah wreck dot climing - brings back memories - not all good. Tibloc thread was the last straw for me. Well, I met a lot of cool partners and garnered many useful little tidbits of beta, so it wasn't a total loss.

So when I moved to Denver almost two years ago, I ended up climbing w/ Lord Slime on more than one occasion.

One nice day in Eldo, who do we bumb into but Nate B.

John says, "Don't start with me Nate."

Had to smile.

Now my first is almost 1 year old... I surf the interweb more than I climb - and my hands are baby soft.

Gnarling Dearest! Thanks for saving me from Rex when he was ripping me a new one - LOL.

Yes, I did my first trad lead with you and Theresa, my 3rd being the 1st pitch of The Line
at The Leap with Theresa and Tom. I remember getting hosed on the very Un-Gym-Like™
5.9 roof crack on Moosedog Tower at Indian Cove, and then watched as you hiked right up.

Last year I was having dinner at Smallshed Flatbreads in Mill Valley when I saw someone
who looked very much like you. However, I did knott think it was you because you
didn't say anything, and as I had had a few happy-hour beers, wasn't about to yell
(slur) "Are you Inez?" from across the room. Was that you or was it knott?

NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

For the love of fuçk's sake, say it will never be so.
I still have nightmares about Zamoron™.
Mad Dog, however (sans Tibloc), would fit well here.

Rex...I'd forgotten about that. A fun but inauspicious day for us all IIRC. Your parnters were rec.climbers too, no? themadco and ???? Sumo and I got to meet Crotch and ??? on Dinner Ledge. Finally got to climb it this year with a partner from the hyperlinked online climbing community. Spray, spray. It took way too many tries. Muchas gracias, btw, for your free and fine Zion topos. They've been the roadmap to a few great vacations...including one w/ Brian in SLC. Small rec.climbing world.

I have a question for y'all...How do you manage to format the little TM for all of the witicisms officially trade marked to rec.climbing?

Melissa - on the Mac, hold the option key and hit the number-2/@ key.
I don't know how you do it running Windows. Anyone?

BTW, I am the one eho brought that rec.climbing tradition over here, FWIW
(yes I know: that and $2.65 will buy me a small cappuccino at Peet's...).

Hey, IFO wouldn't mind seeing Zaumen posts. Looking back, his contributions seem much more cheerful, on-topic and original than the prolix proselytizers so unavoidable here.

As for ™ , © and such -- a simple fix is to type them in your word processor ("insert symbols"), then copy & paste. That's how I spell Munkaðverárgil, for instance. Then I check to see if it worked!

aw come on. mostly it is endless political discussions mixed with the
whiny wankiness of rc.com with only the occasional gem thrown in.
"

Haha.

I lurked and occasionaly posted and picked up some good partners from the wreck, but certain high volume, bad attitude, self-appointed know-it-alls soured the place like a turd in a punchbowl. Similar phenomenon at rc.com. I'm amazed at the grace displayed here at the taco in climbing discussions, of course ethical/style and political debates bring out a great level of conflict, but it's somehow different, I guess less condescending here.

After a thread gets dozens of responses, I poke my head in to see what it's really about...

Rec.climbing. Wow.

I started posting to rec.climbing so long ago I almost wasn't already Old. Brutus had probably just entered the rest home.

I almost feel guilty not posting there much anymore. I owe a great debt of gratitude for Rec.climbing. I can't even tell all the ways.

I've climbed with a lot of rec.climbers. The experience was always good. Hey, I did the Nose with Sulam! The acid test for those who remember.

Anyway, I Love ya'll. Really.

peace

To Knotty--no, it wasn't me. Besides, *I* would have recognized you! Are you still handsome in that Yul Brynnerish way? Oh, yes, and I do remember the Joshua Trip! The roof was a height thing, gnome-friendly, you know.

Best regards,

Hey Dingus, yeah it's me. More into skiing these days - especially after last winter - finally gave up on Shasta in early August. Still run up a Sierra peak every now and then though - just more fun if you can ski back down.

Justin, hey you big flake, when are we going surfing?

Oh, yeah, I got married in August. To tie it all together, Tom and Theresa were there. They are building a house down the road from Hans' place - hopefully roofed in before the storms come.

Check out Tom's blog at takenforranted.com.
