Dude I had my jaw shattered by an elevator accident in the 70's...I used to be so anti anesthetic that it took my local study group of physicians by surprise but to tell you the truth it would all have been less traumatic with more med s. Take the med s (as much as you can get , just make sure when you wake up your underwear is on correctly ) and don't even think twice about the wisdom tooth removal. POC. Easier then an impacted tooth by far,

So have any of you guys done this wisdom teeth thing awake? All the comments about it is helpful..

I have a pretty high pain tollerance. But not really ammon mcneely pain tollence either!

So what should I do? Face my fears and go to sleep or take the pain and stay awake?

Much thanks in advance!

Did it fully awake, some (expensive) amount of a cane of some kind. Total of 8 ugly teeth (2 wisdom - from there its been down hill on my wisdom digits) to get rid of to make room for a decent smile.
I don't remember too much of the day, and had a vicadin script to sleep it off the week...

Its not that bad once its done. But the painful way is the only way, unfortunately.

I thought he was gonna put his foot on my chest for more leverage!

Yeah, that's what it's like. Huge effort to pull a healthy tooth out!

Micronut is the resident tooth guy on the Taco. He's the guy to talk to.

I've been put under twice for non-tooth surgery and it is the way to go. It's like going to sleep then waking right back up, but it's been hours since you went to sleep.

I had mine out in 1982. Things have changed a lot. Propophol for one. Back then it was way more serious to go under genera. I had heard all these horror stories about dry sockets. So I started asking those who had dry sockets about how they had it done. Everyone I talked to about bad experiences had had it done under local.

An issue no one has mentioned here is that some facial nerves go very close to the roots of the teeth. Mine were particularly vulnerable and my surgeon refused to remove them under local because he would have more control if I was unconscious. I still had a dry socket. It turned out to not be as bad as the description.

I would go under again in a heartbeat today. Back then there was no such thing as going home after a procedure of any kind because of the anesthesia. They have much better drugs today, so good you wake up fully after it is over.

Talk to the person who will put you under and tell them your fears. They can tell you what they will do, explain any complications that are possible and tell you how they are prepared in the event any of them happen.

It is a rite of passage. You crawled down from El Cap after breaking your leg. I know people who can't even hike up there. You are tough. You have what it takes to handle this.

I have one wisdom tooth that came in fine that I still have, two that never came through, and one that came in sideways that was hurtin' me like a mutha and needed to be yanked. I looked up an oral surgeon and made an appointment. The guy came in the room looked at the tooth gave me a shot in the gum, left, came back gave me another shot, picked up the knife made a slice and yanked the sucka out with a pair of pliers in one yank. A couple of stitches and it was done.

I asked if we should take the other ones out that had not come through and the guy told me he could go digging for them and bust them all out but it was better to wait and see if they bothered me and then come back. This way I would not have two or three more holes in my mouth, more chance for an infection, and more pain from excavating and busting up the things.

I remember the oral surgeon asking if I wanted general or local. I asked "what's the difference?" "Well", he says, "the only people who die choke to death under general." I did local and didn't feel anything.

Don't be stupid, get the general.

I've had multiple teeth pulled - nearly 20. Most of them were baby teeth, but All the molars had full roots. It's not fun, it is a little painful. It is also highly unpleasant. Except the wisdom teeth. Full anesthesia, cake. It's not like they're bunched together and a couple numbing shots does them all. Nope, different shots for each one. Nerve blocks, digging, cutting, sawing, tweaking, wrenching, yanking.

Get the general, you'll be so much happier, don't be stupid.

Just got word from the doc, They don't have any time for me as long as I have my cast on... So I will have it done during my school year in fall or winter. That means I have like 4 more months of being worried :(

Thanks for all the comments guys! You have all made me start to swing towards having general! Which still freaks me out!

What the hell are "dry sockets"??

ALL the comments have been helpful! Thank you very much!

Wow ron. Hardcore dude!!!!

Wait and see if you have any REAL problems, THEN do something about it...

This was my plan too. Two abscesses later i realized how much that plan sucked!

Abscesses/impacted teeth are no fun. Your gums swell up like a balloon and puss like hell.. Oh ya. It hurts like a son of a bitch too. They can't even pull em' when they are infected like that. They gave me some antibiotics and told me to come back in a week to yank em.

This happened twice too because i didn't have to cash to get the other ones done, so it happened again. The pain was excruciating, a threshold topped only by breaking my spine.

Both abscess extractions were done under local. As this just in said, the worst part is holding your mouth open for so long (while you drool all over the floor) and having the doc scraping around in there with the tools.

I had a third wisdom extracted later under general. This is the way to go dude. No discomfort, no memory of some dude sticking his hands in your mouth for what seems like way too long.

Stop being such a pussy Mickey! You send El cap for fvck sakes. This sh!t's Swan Slab style. You got it in the bag.

When I took my bad fall my jaw hit my knee and I fractured the bone above and below my upper and lower jaw - the bone in which my teeth were set. Hairline fractures grew over time, my teeth started getting crooked and lose, and I was informed I had to get most all my teeth yanked and replaced with implants at about 25 million dollars. So I just went in and had the extractions done with just some local numb juice and let me tell you, it took seven hours (had to have bone graft work done as well) and was downright medieval. As Ed was saying, once that dentinst bears down and those pliers start to singing, it's like being chained up in the galley of an old wooden clipper ship when it's rounding the Horn in a typhoon. The horror . . .

So if there is really some diging in store, go to a dentist that can put you out and avoid the really nasty part of the job - being awake when those pliers are singing in your cakehole. That's hell.

No biggie. Had four sutpid teeth taken out around 7 years ago. Novacaine only. It was actually kind of trippy to listen to the bone breaking as the teeth were tourqued out. Got a scrip for codiene/aspirin combo; only took one. Then again I have a high pain threshold; lived in Texas for 12 years.

Surprised a kid that does walls is afraid of getting a few teeth pulled.

Whitemeatman, when you are rehabing that leg, volunteer to push some of these old f#cks around the Valley in their wheelchairs. They can tell stories about amputations without painkillers, you get to work out and scope the walls.

Back in the stone age
I had all four taken out at once. My (excellent) dentist said "you don't want to go through this twice!"
He also said I didn't need general anesthetic so we did local.
The actual extractions were not as bad as the root canals he had done the year before. (My bad oral hygiene as a teen)

I lived 25 miles from my dentist and he recommended I not drive that far back home.
So I arranged with a friend to recover on her couch while she was at work.

I don't remember the actual extractions as being very painful. Didn't like the sensation of my head being yanked around!
Drove myself to my friend's apt.

After I laid down on her couch and the locals started wearing off was when the pain really began. Oral pain meds weren't so great then. I really hurt all day. By evening, after some warm soup, jello, etc from my friend, I was feeling well enough to drive the 20 miles home. Didn't go to work the next day.
Serious but lessening discomfort for a few days.
You'll be right as rain in two days. If not, RUN don't walk back to the dentist.

This is no longer the Stone Age. Don't fret it. Unless you have a very low pain tolerance, do the locals. You'll survive.
Probably a good idea to have a comfy couch and TV/DVD ready for when you get home. Plan on staying home the next day so stock up with bananas, pre-made pudding, jello, etc. Keep up with your oral pain meds!!
A gorgeous young woman to nurse you ain't bad either. (she WAS a looker and sweet as can be)

Whitey!

Stay away from this thread!

I pull wisdom teeth all the time and it should be no real big deal. Get KO'd. You'll be bouldering in five days and sending A5 within a week if you want. Bunch of sissies like John Long on this thread jus trying to scare a kid. Lightweights. Alll of em.

Just plan to sit on the couch and watch Dosage 1-6 or the entire Band Of Brothers box set for a day or two.

Trust me.

I'm a doctor.
