Most of us think we are immortal....The bottom line is that you don't , at any cost , want to expose your self to traumatizing , psychotic behavior....If one of these encounters do escalate , try and diffuse it cause you don't know who is going to end up on the short end of a brawl which might result in a death...I dated this macho chick that thought she could get away with punching guys then one day she shows up with a black eye that some guy gave her at the bar....Live by the sword....

Bad idea.

It's one thing to stand up to someone when things get out of hand and they are being aggressive and you have no other choice, but when your gf/wife is starting sh#t hoping that you will "defend her honor" it's a whole other issue.

He did the right thing. Calm things down, and get out of dodge.

There are guys out there who thrive on conflict and would love nothing more than to teach some other guy a lesson in front of his gf/wife.

The OP made the smart move. He's clearly smarter than his knuckle dragging gf.

If others aren't doing something that directly affects you why say anything?

I say something to help them avoid getting a ticket... and I'm an as#@&%e.

Keep the girl, just don't take her near crags when she's PMSing, had a bad day, irritated, etc. Plus explain to her that fights means jail time for you, no matter how justified and you can't afford that.

I've mouthed off too. (Poor Bill.)

Pay attention, Young Bulls, for in life, there is something important you need to learn. And the sooner you learn it, the longer and happier you will live. What you need to learn is:

"Choose your battles carefully."

only choose a battle that MATTERS

only choose a battle that YOU CAN WIN

As soon as you find yourself in violation of either of the above two rules, you might as well quit, and save yourself and others a lot of heartache.

Your girlfriend violated both of the above two rules.

These fundamental rules apply to virtually everything and include disagreements with your girlfriend, boss, parents, kids, anyone and anything including internet forums.

Old Bulls - feel free to expound. Need anything more be said?

Note: If you are a Control Freak, then it will be almost impossible for you to follow the above two rules. Accordingly you will live a miserable and lonely life. However some Control Freaks are actually happy only when they are miserable.

Dogs ain't allowed in Big or Little Cottonwood. Tell the dude he's breaking the rules and let it slide. He's gonna be told that every time he brings his dog into the canyons so time or the law will tell. As for your saucy GF, good luck with that.

True. It's been that way for a lot of years. If you live up canyon you can get a permit. It actually makes it kinda nice, no yuppie "forget me not, not!" poop bags left everywhere. Mill creek is dog haven. Bags o sh#t everywhere. I'm a dog guy but I don't get torked over the regs. Plenty of room elsewhere for the pooch.

In today's world this is almost the rule. When I was a kid if you talked sh#t it was game on. Now you go to jail, so so called conflicts are largely just lip flapping and empty threats. Probably beter because fights were always very ugly and made us all feel horribly. When I was a kid I used to fight like a Comanche. I was also insane.

8.08.050 Animals in vehicles
It is unlawful for any person to carry or confine any animal in or upon any vehicle in a cruel or inhumane manner, including but not limited to carrying or confining such animal without adequate ventilation or for an unusual length of time.

4.2. Prohibited Acts. Except as provided in other sections of these regulations, it shall be unlawful for any person:

4.2.9. To allow a dog to enter or to take a dog into, whether loose or on a leash, the watershed area, except as allowed under part 4.3.3 of this regulation.

Would your gf have a similar reaction to someone "depositing" human excreta in the woods?

4.2.5. To deposit any human excreta within the watershed area other than into a toilet connected to a public sewer system or into a Department approved onsite wastewater disposal system or holding tank as outlined in Salt Lake Valley Health Department Regulation #13, Wastewater Disposal.

I remember being very angry about my younger brother's wife getting rowdy and bellicose at a pizza place with the security of several males in our little coterie two years ago..and my brother thinks he's invincible anyway after winning a local "tough man" contest put on by the fire department.

Yes, you don't know if people have guns, knives etc...and punching or getting punched by someone, can inflict death or impairment...and in no way worth having it on one's concience for a lifetime, whether in a jail room or not!

And you may regard a dog as a pest in the hills...but most dog owners view their critters as family!

It's not that difficult to be nice in an antagonistic situation...and I was real nice when I told my sister-in-law to "shut the hell up!" :-)

Why is it that women (generalization) lack the ability to deliver information with tact? Somehow it usually comes out catty. Why is that?

The big mistake was talking to a dog owner.
You cannot talk to dog owners.
Cannot
It is like trying to reason with a suicide bomber, a Westboro Baptist church member, a flat earth believer, or a conspiracy theorist.

If you were at a Florida crag you could have legally shot him.

That, and they have those huge pythons that are apparently on the loose in Florida. It seems to me that having large, carnivorous reptiles slithering around the crags could put a serious dent in dog-created conflict at the crags.
