Wow, how did I miss this thread. My grandfather (actually, my dad's stepfather, but the only granddad I knew) used to go an annual motorcycle trip to the Saline Valley with 3 or 4 of this old buddies. A bunch of old guys on bikes almost as old. Ancient gear, trash bags for ponchos but having a blast. Always wanted to go.

An easy yes to 2 wd (even a sedan drive carefully) unless there is snow. Haven't been since last winter but check here for fairly current road reports:

yup , concur , most any vehicle will make it into the Saline from the north or south , no big deal ...

...Lippincott has been tamed :(

A 4x4 would still be handy , but a careful driver in a 2wd could likely make it . It's still steep , narrow, and beautiful , so take care .

You know ur getting old when you say "it was like 20 years ago" when we visited this place.

We were two young ski bums from Colorado doing a "Mud season" camping trip from Colorado to SF, (where there was a friend to visit) then back to Co and see as much as we could in-between. I think it was in SF at a real cool bookstore, another dinosaur, we found a book that showed all the hot springs in the country......
After we bought it our mission home was to hit as many as possible....

We got into the Saline Valley somehow from the Sierras and still unsure of our whereabouts decided at the half way mark of our gas tank we would turn around if we did not find this place.
Well an old apple cider jug of water at a turn off and I think a bat we found our way to this oasis.

We were thrown back into the 60's.......

Amazed at the beauty of the valley, (even though as described it was HOT) We must have been there in April/May. The people were very friendly and inviting.

That first days soaking in the pools with the people whom were all quite acquainted with each other invited us to come to the fire that night for a slide show.

Huh a slide show in the middle of the dessert ???

We came to the fire where a large white sheet was hung and when everyone was around the fire, the moderator said ok lets go and started up the generator.

The guy giving the slide show was a historian that had known the entire history of this magnificent valley. He had even hiked the entire length of the first tramway in America to find historic glass slides in dumps from former boom towns.

He researched and knew almost each person in these glass slides he had transposed onto film and then was able to tell the complete history of the valley and how it came to be.

Needless to say this 20 something young couple were blown away...

And because the pictures we took were on well print film....

none to share...

Commercializing the Saline with a sticker, what a bunch of knuckleheads. It's full of poisonous snakes and biting bugs and lizards with big teeth. Keep out or people will get hurt.
