Mick, it's January. It's 2012, you're in the States and I'm reminding you to do something.... remember?

Meanwhile, book a flight west. Mussy's no fun, you and I can go for an up-to-date report of Tuolume climbing, skating, bikini contest and more.

Pussy-on-Ice...you gotta lova California

Cmon Blue, I don't think the guy on the pogo is one.

Any bets on who will be the first to fall through the ice? And how many "how tragic" posts there will be?

Has anyone taken advantage of the weather to do any climbing? A quick jaunt up Cathedral Peak in January? Are most places snow-free?

Does anyone know where I can rent ice skates in SF bay area, preferably east bay? I called a place in Oakland that says they don't and they don't know of any place that does.

I plan to head up there on Sunday.

In Sequoia/Kings Canyon they've closed the road between the parks not because of snow, but because of budget cuts. Now they've announced that it will be open from 9-5 on weekends and holidays until it snows. What if your dayhike gets you back to your car after 5?

They also closed the Lodgepole Campground for the entire winter for the first time.

Hey F10 - Next time, you should come down and say hi. Here are some better photos that you could have gotten if you weren't afraid of the wildlife.

I was in Oslo at this time two years ago, during quite a cold winter there. All the rivers, lakes and fjords were frozen. The newspapers, and each town's website, contained up to date information on ice safety, and in many places the unsafe areas were marked off. Basic public safety.

There weren't any bikini-wearing people out, though - too cold and windy. Though the Baffin Babes showed what can be done.

Dunno about skate rentals, seems there aren't many options. However, I suggest calling:

 Oakland Ice Arena
 Hockey X

One of the many temporary outdoor holiday rinks - where do they get their rental skates?

You know .....

It's simply incredible that one can drive to such an extraordinary beautiful setting to go ice skating.

Including us (that bailed) there were 11 people on Cathedral on New Years Day. Bail TR was posed on the forum a few days ago.

I think anything on Stately would be fun to do while watching skaters below. I give it until after MLK weekend before we get a storm.

Brilliant photo, crag man.

Why rent? Go to Play it again sports, Skates are good to have. You can always resell.

We climbed Stately Pleasure on Jan 2nd and it was great! Was really cool to see ice skaters frolicking about while on route. Then as we returned to the cars, we just took the rock shoes off and donned our skates for some "pass the puck." It's been a great opportunity this year to recreate in activities/combos that are not norm for us in the Eastern Sierra.

As several folks pointed out, 1999/2000 is incorrect. This link has the real closing date for 2000 - January 1st:
