I heard a rumor that the park will be closing Tioga Road snow or no snow on the 10th due to budget constraints and worries that someone will fall through ice. Anybody heard anything else about this? Seems like a crime to close the road when there are no hazards on it.

When should it close, in terms of prudent management? It's not like anyone at this time of year expects the pass to be open, or is depending on it.

I imagine that Mammoth Lakes would pay to keep it open.

Just think, at some point, in the very warm future, the damn road may stay open all year...

At some point on New Years there were almost 50 people spread out over various parts of Tenaya Lake. Ice Hockey, dogs frolicking and lots of skaters
There were many signs posted by the NPS stating not to go out on the ice. "DANGEROUS CONDITIONS!"
Seemed obvious to me that going on the ice was not a recommended activity. Would be a shame to close the road to enforce this.

I think the real issue here is whether there is space in the budget to patrol the road.

It should stay open long enough that I can drive over it on the way to OR!

The Tioga Road and the Big Oak Flat Road are not part of the California State Hwy System, but on each end of the park, they connect to State Highway 120.
I think that if the road is safe for passage, the park would have a hard time closing it because of "budget issues." Heck, they're going to rehab the road over the next few years with mega bucks. I do not know, but they could upgrade the subsurface to allow plowing, which the current road probably can't handle.

That must have been great to see, in such a beautiful place too!!!
Mighty Hiker, you got any kind of statistic about when Tioga was closed so late in the past?
Has there ever been a year that it was open all year?
What was the shortest closure for the pass?
Cheers to the ladies!!

It's only a State road to the park entrances.
120 thru the park is federal road.
Caltrans stops at the park entrances.
You're wrong again fatty .....
