I heard a rumor that the park will be closing Tioga Road snow or no snow on the 10th due to budget constraints and worries that someone will fall through ice. Anybody heard anything else about this? Seems like a crime to close the road when there are no hazards on it.

When should it close, in terms of prudent management? It's not like anyone at this time of year expects the pass to be open, or is depending on it.

At some point on New Years there were almost 50 people spread out over various parts of Tenaya Lake. Ice Hockey, dogs frolicking and lots of skaters

There were many signs posted by the NPS stating not to go out on the ice. "DANGEROUS CONDITIONS!"

Seemed obvious to me that going on the ice was not a recommended activity. Would be a shame to close the road to enforce this.

I think the real issue here is whether there is space in the budget to patrol the road.

The Tioga Road and the Big Oak Flat Road are not part of the California State Hwy System, but on each end of the park, they connect to State Highway 120.

I think that if the road is safe for passage, the park would have a hard time closing it because of "budget issues." Heck, they're going to rehab the road over the next few years with mega bucks. I do not know, but they could upgrade the subsurface to allow plowing, which the current road probably can't handle.

First water skiing on Tenaya, now bikinied skaters. What next?

Tioga Pass opening and closing dates are very carefully hidden in the YNP website: http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/seasonal.htm

The latest the pass has closed since the records start in 1980 is December 11th.

Tioga Pass breaks record for being open in winter
January 4, 2012 by jeffpelline

On January 2, Tioga Pass (9,943 feet) set the all-time record (since 1933) of being open. In fact, the road has been open only six times in December since 1933.

I’ve been going to Tioga Pass since childhood, fishing at the lakes. I can remember routinely walking across snow in July to make a cast into Tioga Lake.

Here’s a look at driving up the beautiful pass to Yosemite National Park with the National Wildlife Federation’s California Director, Beth Pratt.

In Sequoia/Kings Canyon they've closed the road between the parks not because of snow, but because of budget cuts. Now they've announced that it will be open from 9-5 on weekends and holidays until it snows. What if your dayhike gets you back to your car after 5?

They also closed the Lodgepole Campground for the entire winter for the first time.

I was in Oslo at this time two years ago, during quite a cold winter there. All the rivers, lakes and fjords were frozen. The newspapers, and each town's website, contained up to date information on ice safety, and in many places the unsafe areas were marked off. Basic public safety.

There weren't any bikini-wearing people out, though - too cold and windy. Though the Baffin Babes showed what can be done.

Then as we returned to the cars, we just took the rock shoes off and donned our skates for some "pass the puck." skateboarding- it was tough to get going very fast because I could not get traction with my right foot (crampon or hobnail boot would solve this problem). Also you need wide trucks, big wheels and a very steady transition from pumping to standing, else the board slips sideways.

I'm not sure whether I should be envious or not. It's cool to think you could slab climb and ice skate within a few hundred feet of each other. Its gonna be rough without some water in the bank for next summer though. Is this the driest Nov./Dec./Jan on record for the Sierra? And then we have Cordova, AK. who's trying to figure out where to put all the snow.

Is this the driest Nov./Dec./Jan on record for the Sierra?

Hard to tell because record-keeping changed. I know that on Dec. 26, 1975, I drove my BMW 2002 (not exactly an SUV) from the base of Patterson Bluffs to the Wishon turnoff without any problems. That winter ('75-'76) was the first of two consecutive drought years in California. In spring of 1977, I climbed the Arches without getting wet -- another sign of how dry the mountains were.

What an amazing and peaceful drive back from Red Rock yesterday via Death Valley and Tioga Pass. It was so quiet there at night...maybe only 3 other cars came or went the whole way from the pass to Crane Flat. The car thermometer said it was 9 degrees at Pothole Dome. We saw a coyote who looked like he could use a lot more fur and a block the size of a large ice chest in the middle of the road.

Perhaps we should start a pool for the final closing date?

VM, you just gotta refer to a BETTER forecast :)

Winter starts this weekend!

Saturday and Sunday --HEAVY SNOW -- -> Colder storms with copious mid Pacific moisture and modified arctic air push in off of the Pacific Ocean, causing heavy snow across the area, falling down to 6,000 feet and lower (to 3,000 feet by Sunday). The first storm moves in on Saturday, with some great powder expected to top off the dense base of snow. Areas above 8,000 feet and along the crest are expected to see 8+ feet of snow Thursday through Sunday, with more coming next week.

Just thinking the Park could get some extra money with a "Tioga Pass Rally Car Time Trial Race". Ever wondered what it'd be like to zip past the Toulumne Store going 100mph to cheering crowds and not get a speeding ticket?

Watching such events seem to be popular in Euro. Mostly in anticipation of the crashes. Rollovers launching down the slabs at Olmstead would be quite the attraction.

Awesome, 1:34, safety guy comes running up on the scene with cig in mouth and coffee cup in hand.

A teachers aid in my EMT class had some stories about rally-like races BITD near Sonora, CA. Wonder if it was like this??

More on topic, the coming week or two of weather is certainly not going to speed up the Tioga Pass opener. But CA needs the water, so bring it.
