The fish you're trolling for has published several collections of climbing lore including the story of the crashed plane. While many of us love to read his contributions to this site, maybe you oughtta pony up a few bucks on one of his fine books.

its true, i was there. the plane crashed in lower merced lake. a piece of the plane was found by a local skier. the feds came and decieded to leave it until spring. some climbers went up and started chopping in the ice and found bales of pot soaked in jet fuel. some other climbers brought up chain saws and cut the ice and got all the pot. by the time i got there you could barely walk on the ice but you could see the plane underwater. jack dorn got the pilots vest with a little black book, much $$$ and some cocaine. the owners of the flight found out and wanted to meet him. he was to meet them at the old mr bar one rainy fall night but a rescue was called on lost arrow. he fell off the falls trail in the dark past columbia point, or was he pushed?? the rescue call turned out to be bogus.

all true

btw the pot would sometimes flash up in flames from the jet fuel, way good dude!

"the owners of the flight found out and wanted to meet him. ....he fell off the falls trail in the dark past columbia point, or was he pushed?? "

WOW. i had heard the part of about the rescue (fell? pushed?). but did not know the "owners" wanted to meet him, nor that the rescue was a false alarm.

one other thing i always wondered... about a month after the gold, er green rush... kauk, sutton, burton and? bard? went and did a late winter ascent of the NA. was that just a way to get the hell outta dodge to avoid the ranger danger?

Yes, I do recall a somewhat kerosene like taste to that stuff. Did the trick though.

Um, no name?

What's with all the "Look. Its time to really shut up now."

You paranoid? Still expecting your bad juj-ju payback?
Or just plain stupid.

My guess is stupid, so shut the f*#k up; this is essential climbing history.

Yo,

I wrote a pretty extensive bit on the whole shebang in a book entitled "Rock Jocks, wall rats and hang dogs," but have no idea if it's still in print. There's another article, called Bird's Boys, that details some of the fine points about the plane crash and weed fandango. I didn't know the "facts" abot the Dorn story related on this thread, but it sounds a bit sketchy to me--like an out take from the Godfather. But who knows. That was 25 years ago and things tend to get fogged over and embroidered as time goes by . . .

J Elvis,

You wrote, "I wrote a pretty extensive bit ..yada yada....but have no idea if it's still in print. "

Now, help me out here but..doncha get royalty checks or sumsuch? Wouldn’t you know if pennies were still dribbling in from the proceeds of that book?

And P.S.- GREAT BOOK. I keep a copy near the throne for contemplative reading.

One thing I found glaring however; ALLl references to Rasta Tobacca had been scrubbed assiduously clean. Was it your editors forcing you to toe the PC line? Do you regret not painting the complete picture?

Knowing what life was like back then (and now), some of the stories lacked authenticity by said exclusion (such as~~ the description of a bivy complete with some “liquor filched from Dad’s liqueur cabinet??” come on… you were scrolling endless reefers during that and most other bivis…

I heard a few years ago that the plane was actually owned by some drug baron named Jose Montoya and he was real pissed that a bunch of climbers cashed in on his goods. Apparently, he died having not achieved retribution and charged his son, Paco, with the task of seeking vengence on not only the perpetrators of the 'theft' but also on the entire Climbinati.
