All,

We have official notice that a few climbing areas will be closed over the weekend. Please see below for area closures for Thursday evening (6/16, tonight) through Sunday afternoon (6/19). There will also be other areas closed Friday evening through Saturday evening. We will keep you updated on the official word for the Friday/Saturday closures.

"All climbing routes from and including Church Bowl east to Washington Column (Washington Column itself remains open) will be closed from Thursday sunset through Sunday afternoon. This includes Bishops Terrace, Royal Arches, Serenity Crack, Son’s of Yesterday."

Thank you for your cooperation in these temporary closures.

Here is a link to the park webpage on the closures as well.

Obama must be a hardcore climber if he is going to do all of those routes in that time. Well, not so hardcore since the Column is still open.

Thanks for the update. I now have an excuse not to do any of those climbs this weekend!

Where do I sign up to have routes closed so I do not have any competition for the routes I want to do?

I hope they have thermal sensors to keep scanning the cliffs while he is at the Ahwahnee.

I doubt they'll have secret service sweeping every route with line of site in that area. Someone could already be up there on a bivy, all coated up in wet mud, just waiting. What about up at the walk-off forest for Royal Arches area? Top of Arches Terrace area? Before the pendulum on Royal Arches? Up in the gully past Serenity/Sons for the finish of Ahwahnee Buttress?

So many places to hide, tough to get close enough to check them all. Security nightmare. Maybe drones to the rescue?

Secret Service is pretty diligent, they will be scanning the cliffs. Maybe someone could rap in? I knew a cop who was assigned to SWAT in San Diego. When Bush came to town the cop was assigned to a position on top of a building. He decided he wanted to get a better look at the prez so he used his rifle scope. Secret Service pounced and arrested him pretty quickly. he got booted from SWAT.

Countdown to ranting Republican response about how shameful it is that Obama is visiting the Valley and obstructing access to real American access to our Parks....

It seems likely that all NPS employees, and YOSAR, are involved in security measures for the Obamas' visit, many of which we'll never know about. But it wouldn't be a surprise if that included inspecting if not securing nearby climbing routes.

I just want to know when Werner and the Obamas will be going for their hike or even climb.

And yes, apogee is correct. Finally - it only took seven + years - Obama has actually done something that the right-wingers can legitimately "blame" him for, something that in a minor way even affects climbers. (Although it may also benefit parks, and so climbers.) And not a word from espotato, klimmer, and gang.

I'd like to climb with him. He's got good reach.

But never cool to hog lines.

Obama's cragging day in the Ditch.

That would be the coolest goddamn thing that I ever saw in politics.

Question for ClimbingRanger:
What traffic can I expect in the Yosemite loop Saturday and Sunday due to President visit?
Any suggestions of specific time of the day that better not to drive on the loop at all?

Any places which is OPEN but you can suggest Not to go this weekend due to expected long time waiting in closed roads?

So who is guiding? A 3 day closure is not for bird nesting protection.

Will the loop road be closed as well?

Obama typically travels with a 21 vehicle entourage when he comes to LA and all roads/freeways on his route are closed.

looks like I found answer on my question:
enter in the park before 8am climb all day and not get back to the car before 6pm

Here is a link to more information for visitors coming to the park this weekend.

http://www.nps.gov/yose/learn/news/yosemite-national-park-prepares-for-extremely-busy-weekend-and-anticipates-temporary-area-closures.htm

If your coming to the park to climb this weekend I would suggest staying down canyon or other areas outside the valley. Or, get into the valley early and leave late.

"So far this calendar year, visitation to the park has increased by over 20% from 2015’s record visitation. Both last year and so far this spring, the park has seen traffic congestion, delays of up to two hours and full parking lots on weekends and holidays."

Wow! Reasons? More rain and snow pack so the falls are better perhaps? Maybe 100th Birthday events and publicity?

It's time. Remove all private vehicles from valley central.
