All,
We have official notice that a few climbing areas will be closed over the weekend. Please see below for area closures for Thursday evening (6/16, tonight) through Sunday afternoon (6/19). There will also be other areas closed Friday evening through Saturday evening. We will keep you updated on the official word for the Friday/Saturday closures.
"All climbing routes from and including Church Bowl east to Washington Column (Washington Column itself remains open) will be closed from Thursday sunset through Sunday afternoon. This includes Bishops Terrace, Royal Arches, Serenity Crack, Son’s of Yesterday."
Thank you for your cooperation in these temporary closures.
Here is a link to the park webpage on the closures as well.

Obama must be a hardcore climber if he is going to do all of those routes in that time. Well, not so hardcore since the Column is still open.

I hope they have thermal sensors to keep scanning the cliffs while he is at the Ahwahnee.
I doubt they'll have secret service sweeping every route with line of site in that area. Someone could already be up there on a bivy, all coated up in wet mud, just waiting. What about up at the walk-off forest for Royal Arches area? Top of Arches Terrace area? Before the pendulum on Royal Arches? Up in the gully past Serenity/Sons for the finish of Ahwahnee Buttress?
So many places to hide, tough to get close enough to check them all. Security nightmare. Maybe drones to the rescue?

Secret Service is pretty diligent, they will be scanning the cliffs. Maybe someone could rap in? I knew a cop who was assigned to SWAT in San Diego. When Bush came to town the cop was assigned to a position on top of a building. He decided he wanted to get a better look at the prez so he used his rifle scope. Secret Service pounced and arrested him pretty quickly. he got booted from SWAT.

It seems likely that all NPS employees, and YOSAR, are involved in security measures for the Obamas' visit, many of which we'll never know about. But it wouldn't be a surprise if that included inspecting if not securing nearby climbing routes.
I just want to know when Werner and the Obamas will be going for their hike or even climb.
And yes, apogee is correct. Finally - it only took seven + years - Obama has actually done something that the right-wingers can legitimately "blame" him for, something that in a minor way even affects climbers. (Although it may also benefit parks, and so climbers.) And not a word from espotato, klimmer, and gang.

Question for ClimbingRanger:
What traffic can I expect in the Yosemite loop Saturday and Sunday due to President visit?
Any suggestions of specific time of the day that better not to drive on the loop at all?
Any places which is OPEN but you can suggest Not to go this weekend due to expected long time waiting in closed roads?

So who is guiding? A 3 day closure is not for bird nesting protection.
Will the loop road be closed as well?
Obama typically travels with a 21 vehicle entourage when he comes to LA and all roads/freeways on his route are closed.

"So far this calendar year, visitation to the park has increased by over 20% from 2015’s record visitation. Both last year and so far this spring, the park has seen traffic congestion, delays of up to two hours and full parking lots on weekends and holidays."
Wow! Reasons? More rain and snow pack so the falls are better perhaps? Maybe 100th Birthday events and publicity?
It's time. Remove all private vehicles from valley central.

Man i hope I live to see that. Hated the concept when they started in Zion, but now I wish it were a year round thing. Looks like Arches will be next, but I'd think they'll have to do something like this in the ditch eventually.
Enjoy Mr President! If you're wondering, Bears Ears would be a fantastic Birthday/Father's day gift for this desert rat.

What a crock. I assume the "Majestic" is closed as well so he and his entourage will be safe and well kept at taxpayer expense? Bad news for bear 46.
I cannot believe my eyes. Did you just make an assumption and then get mad and make accusations based on your very own wild imagination?
I just called the hotel to confirm. It's not closed to guests who are staying or arriving. Yesterday, I rode around the loop on my bike in the afternoon. Was surprised how light the traffic was and how business as usual it was, esp when I was later told that President Obama was already in the park!
Today, I watched from El Cap for a few hours and did not detect anything unusual for a Saturday. And my drive out of the park around 3pm was all smooth sailing.
I was told that when he gave a speech under Yosemite Falls this morning, the traffic in the vicinity was indeed demobilized temporarily. But come on, this is the much respected (source) president of your beautiful, prosperous, and welcoming nation we are talking about. The necessary security and safety is very much common sense, and a little inconvenience is nothing but expected. What's to cry about?

I love the way Americans take orders, thus showing they are not worthy to lead the world, civilizationally speaking, as they effectively do. This sort of self-humiliation would NEVER work in France. Instead little American sheep take unconstitutional orders with alacrity, pride and total obedience. They should be ashamed of themselves, instead, and the rest of the world should be afraid. Very afraid. Indeed, who is this Obama? An employee of We The People! Wake up, People, instead of just goose stepping proudly in the sunset of the dignity of the human spirit. The meaning and appeal of real climbing is freedom. Taking orders, the exact opposite.

It is well within their authority.

Were/Are you in the Valley? I don't need to figure it out; I was there. It was light when I rode and drove around (early mornings and then afternoons). That said, I'm pretty sure there were times and spots that traffic was heavy. A couple of weekends ago, it took someone I know TWO HOURS to get around the loop. Sure, blame it on Obama.

To clarify, no I was not in the valley, so am just sup-positioning based on what What I've seen here in SoCal. Every time he comes to SoCal for fund raising it is a huge inconvenience for commuters. Many just take the day off rather than deal with the additional congestion.
I hate all politicians equally. Hell, I'd rather see another 4 years of Obama than Hillary or Trump (not likely).
I don't hold Obama in a state of reverence. He is just another guy trying to do his job while sucking at the taxpayers teat.

I think the traffic was light because of all the news stations said its best to stay away because traffic and logistics were going to be a nightmare. Can't imagine being in the secret service and having to secure a place like the valley, totally understandable to close parts down. I mean, we close huge areas for a bird that's not even threatened anymore.
It looked like everyone went to Sequoia, there was a line at the entrance and it was nuts up there this weekend!
Not an Obama supporter but I like any time a president visits and supports public lands, we have at least that in common. Bonus points for the first family doing some climbing!

Reminder to the hateful know-nothings: the French Republic declared war TO Hitler. Instead the USA collaborated WITH Hitler. Actually many US corporations kept on collaborating with Hitler throughout the Second World War.
Prescott Bush made a fortune from that collaboration. However, he had to resign from his position as head of Hitler's most important defense company in August 1942. To prevent prosecution for his management of American-Silesian after Hitler had declared war TO the USA on December 11,1941, Prescott was nominated US Senator. Anyway I am happy to see there are so many Bush lovers on this site.
Every extermination camp had at least one IBM computer, often more, and they were directly manged from New York (the special paper cards got jammed all the time).
Hitler was little more than a US plant, planted by hyper racist Judeophobic plutocrat Henry Ford as early as 1920, then further watered by Wall Street, and the who is who of US plutocratic corporations. To see that, nearly a century later, people don't get it, is always a pleasure.
Ah, another point: Ancient Regime France created the US (which did not pay one cent of the 5 trillion dollars war France conducted against Great Britain to keep the US independent).
Vichy was an unconstitutional coup, after the Nazis had overrun more than half of France. Vichy was recognized immediately as the legitimate government of France by Roosevelt, who sent there as ambassador his right hand man, Admiral William Leahy. That did not make Vichy legitimate.
Naturally, President F D Roosevelt had betrayed completely the French Republic, which courageously fought Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, Imperial Japan, the Soviet Union, and the horde of hellish American plutocrats, all at the same time.... I am happy to report that the latter, with their obnoxious little servants are still active and thriving...

They also lost 390k civilians compared the 12k in the US. So by total lives lost they lost 50% more in absolute terms, and nearly 5x in per capita terms.

Statistics, damn statistics, and lies.
Would you care to conjecture how many civilian casualties the US would have sustained if the Nazis had occupied our country? Go ahead and use your per capita math.
I am not saying there weren't loyal French fighting throughout WWII nor that it was an 'easy' occupation for the French but Patrice is way off base and judging from the memorials to foreign soldiers who fell in defense of France, 'she' is not particularly indicative of the majority of French feeling on this matter.
