This site needs a moderator.
Would a volunteer, from among the decent and respected people here, please stand up? It needn't be a "full time job". It need be only someone with the general consensus of the population, who will review complaints and behavior and apply a gentle (or not so gentle) guide for us to aspire to?
WE could vote on his or her honorable post on occasion, like on a confidence or no confidence basis.
I would accept the request of a Werner, a Karl Baba, Crimpergirl, Todd Gordon, Steve Grossman. We have a LOT of decent people who already spend a lot of time on this site. And who can be counted on to provide a minimalist approach to the battles that are waged here.
It would be an honor for the Member who took the role, and a substantial step up from the pit we are in now, where the lowest participant sets the standards. It would show that, as a group at least, we are a great group of people.
I have talked with the owner of this site recently, and he feels he doesn't have the time, it would distract from his time throwing himself into and off from climbing routes. But he implied that he wouldn't have a problem with an organic solution, like when we decided to put (OT) in the thread titles of ambiguous lead-ins, or several other conventions that we have created to solve our own problems.
I think it is clear that the lowest standards of civility and decorum are not being maintained right now, and the the least respectable members of the site are providing the bottom rung of our standards.
As in "How low can they go".
Several members have already recounted problems they have had with the existing, current approach, and on an Internationally accessible Public forum without so much as a password access, we need to consider issues of decency and privacy, as well as the safety of our membership.
I think this approach would offer the flexibility and the guidance that we desire, without curbing the need we feel to wrassle in the dirt occasionally.

Supertopo will cease to exist with the addition of a moderator.
You of all people should know this rox, if there was a mod, you would already be history, not that you wouldn't take others down with you.

NO moderators. That's what makes this site good. You want moderators go to rockclimbing.com.
If someone's really out of line people will email those with the mallet and they will get the whack a mole. Perfect.

RJ, If you just ignore people that bother you, they go away. Do you want moderating of your free opinions?

One of the great things about Supertopo is that it doesn't need a moderator. The combination of very well-thought out an well-written content and the presence of acknowledged legends in our sport who are also very mature in their dealings on this site create a very good environment.

With all due respect, if you don't like a particular thread, don't go there, stop patronizing it. This forum is hardly a base pit. I'm here, I invest my precious time here, because I found it to be one of the most dynamical forums on the internet. Way to go, Owner, of Super Taco!

NOT NEEDED! Just ignore the threads that get out of hand. Ignore the threads that are off color. Ignore the political threads. Ignore anything that gets up yer arse. It's that simple.
If a moderator starts moderating me... I, for one, will be visiting FAR LESS OFTEN! (I have a wife who does my moderating.)

Lord, help me to change the things I can,
Accept those things that I cannot change,
And give me the wisdom to know the difference.
Nice job cragman! I've said that one more than I'd like to admit.....
