Dang, those things were nasty, but I bought them by the case load.
They were virtually bullet proof.
Drop em off a wall, and still eat em.
I remember using one to hammer in tent stakes, and may have used one as a shovel too.
It could even be used as a nut tool.
Then I went to the Ciff Bar, which tasted better, but not as indestrucible.
What is the IN bar now?

I've tried so many bars, and the one I always come back to is the time-tested Tiger's Milk Bar! They've been around since I was a kid (at least 35 years?), and they actually just introduced a new flavor, Chocolate Crunch. They are small, the 'chocolate' coating doesn't melt, and they are imminently palatable. If a bar is nutritionally complete and has all sorts of great stuff in it but isn't edible, it just ain't much good. I suppose you could use a Tiger's Milk as a tool if it was frozen as well...........

When they first came out, yeah, I did a bunch of them, but never liked the fact that they were about as chewy as a piece of concrete when it got cold, and it always seemed like I was eating some kind of extruded spaceman Soylent Green product.
I went to ClifBars for many years- much more chewable, and seemed more like real food. But after hundreds of them down the gullet, I'm pretty burned on them, too. This is my current preferred bar:
A little bit pricey, but it is real food, loads of calories, vegan, no weird chemicals or additives and some great flavors...yummy!

That is exactly why I love the thangs- they're loaded with calories (from fats/proteins, not as much from sugar). They keep me cranking much, much longer than any other bar. If you are afraid of fats, you'll be frightened off by them- if your metabolism works better on fats (as does mine), they're great.

I've gone back to powerbars (if its not too cold) after trying a few others. Cliff bars make me choke (even more than powerbars). But I have to admit, after years of sandwiches and cheese and gorp I'm now hooked on the convenience of bars.

Only three or four ingredients... lots of great flavors... plenty of protein and energy... what's not to like?

Power Bars: Other than a couple of their "harvest" variety, they all give me the gag reflex now.
Clif Bars: They last much longer, but now I'm down to the chocolate mint, and peanut butter chocolate chip ones as about the only thing I can choke down.
Pro-Max: Burnt out long ago, and they were always too sugary anyway.
Snickers: For moderate temps I still love Snickers. Tasty, cheap, and reasonably functional. Lousy in warm temps.
Tiger's Milk: Still like these, never loved them, never hated them.
Gooey Shots: Tried 3 brands, all sucked, none ever saw a second purchase (and they made my teeth hurt after eating too many...)
Recent Substitutes:
1. Fruit leather and jerky. Downed with gatorade this is my preferred wall snack regimen. Bring a toothpick or floss...
2. Various GORP, but once I get a stale handful I get a gag reflex for GORP that last a few weeks.
3. Gummy stuff works well on walls (gummy bears, swedish fish, etc).

Pros: Power bars are Space Food Sticks! The astronauts ate 'em! That and Tang. Lots more btus in there than those Clif bars.
Cons: You want to vary your diet. You can really lose your appetite for them when they start coming out the other end. Impossible to eat when the mercury drops below 0C - root cause of many back country epics.

I'm back on the original chocolate Power Bars. Some of the Cliff Bar flavors are cloyingly sweet, especially the frosted ones. They make me gag. Cliff discontinued the best flavor they ever made (dark chocolate). The trick with P-bars is to keep them in an inside pocket where body heat will keep them pliable. And when I want something different, my fav gorp is dried blueberries, cherries and almonds.
Moof, did you try the Carboom apple cinnamon gel? Tastes just like the gooey filling of an apple pie. Mmmmmmmmm! They're my goo of choice.

I think the Carrot Cake flavored Clif Bars are pretty good. Some of the Atkins bars are pretty good.
I think if you eat too much of any one variety or type you'll learn to hate it. Variety is the spice of life!

Big Sur Bars! I was introduced to them while scavenging through hiker barrels -- 1 bar is 5oz, 700 calories, and could feed a family of 4. And it tastes like a cookie!
