one of my very bestest buddies works with (actually for, in the great food chain) Ed.

he says Ed has repeatedly been the only reason he hasn't yet lost it and walked away. he says Ed is the only guy behind the fence who can help him stop frothing at the mouth and regain his cool, laugh even.

i need an Ed where i work... this world needs more Eds.

Can't believe I don't have a pic of myself and Ed H. Will for sure get one in a few days at this years FaceLift. Hopefully, Ed, you will be there.

Here's a photo from last years Lift with Anders...Mighty Hiker.

What Ed Hartouni means to me: An incredible gentleman that was one of a handful of people that helped lynnies transition from regular life to Super Topo Living. Before I entered this surrealistic sphere of higher intelligence I had never even emailed... much less posted on a WHAT chat room. Is this really a chat room? Nah, I know most of yo now in the flesh. It's friends talking, sharing and caring ....even Wes who tries to be tough.

BUT I never would have made it in Taco Life if a certain handful had not recognized a person suffering tremendous loss and reached out to yo here. Ed Being a major one helping out. Took time to email explaining things and listening and then offering the best advice.

Ed, lynnie be blessed with your friendship. Thanks for listening to my crazy family stories and thanks for your friendship and encouragement along the life path. I am growing and living again and I am stronger....thanks to Dudes like yo who Care. Peace and Joy always to you mi mano. Lynne

obtw.....did I mention I do so very much APPRECIATE yo. :DDD

sorry to hear about you back, ed... say, my leg/hip has been my pain, so i sure understand...

i am hoping that you will feel wonderful, once again, in spite of the back, and in spite of older age... may you still hit the ol' trail full of spunk and the hunger for what each new day brings... :)

I too appreciate all the effort that Ed put into research, writing and hand holding on my own difficult personal issues. Without his many letters to colleagues in Geneva, we would never have seen even half of the wonderful contributions posted on the Frank Sacherer thread. A lot went on behind the scenes too and he was always there with a sympathetic understanding and calm advice. He's one of the people I most look forward to meeting next year in the Valley.

Meanwhile I can definitely appreciate the back problems and getting older. At a certain age we don't need physics theory any more to tell us about gravity, we take part in experimental work every day just getting out of bed!

Only good boulderers can walk.

After my last bouldering session a SWAT team had to put me in a frame and carry me to the hospital.

If there really is no vertebral damage after a fresh injury the lower back pain may be due to an attempt by the muscles to prevent damage. Whether this is the source for pain that lasts on for years I am not trained enough to know. Howsomever the stiffness Ed and Jan describe I have had for going on 30 years. During much of that time just lying recumbent involved pain. (Sleeping is actually quite hard on the back. I have read putting a pillow under the knees helps.)

One strategy is to do some LIGHT stretching before trying to get up. Knees to the chin kind of stuff. Remember however, stretching too severely can do damage. Be very careful while trying to touch your toes.

My first bout of pulling a stick through the sand at the beach several years ago largely cured the problem as long as I avoided impact. My current bout of pulling has already got me to the point where just lying down no longer hurts. But I posted on that already.

Ed is in a phase right now that no one else has ever suffered through.

He wants to be 18 again.

The way to get out of that phase is to remember vividly all the bad things associated with being 18.

Fixes the problem in a big hurry.

When first introduced to climbing it was the chemicals that it put into the bloodstream that made it so mind-bendingly great. But the people involved in it were, for some crazy reason, just the kind of folk that it was good to have around. Ed reminds me of those good old days.

Many thanks to Jaybro for such a fine profile.

Ed visited Vancouver early this year and thanks to Mighty Hiker, I got to meet him.

He showed excellent thin crack skills on this Squamish testpiece.

His contributions here have taught me a lot. I especially appreciate his "workflow" list for image processing.

It is true, though, that he remains mysterious.

I been travelin', you mighta heard, and come late to this party. But Ed is high on
my list of must-read ST posters, for his offwidth climbing stories and even more
for his formidably reasonable, deeply informed, and characterized-by-saintly-
patience explanations about science. So yeah, cheers to Ed!

Perhaps we'll have the chance for a non-virtual toast later this fall. I might be in
SF just before the AGU meetings, the weekend of Dec 12.

Three cheers for a fellow scientist!
I'm mostly just a lurker on ST and certainly haven't met the man, but I've always found Dr. Hartouni's posts to be thoughtful. His TRs and accounts of climbing adventures are always enjoyable. He certainly is a real inspiration to those of us that spend way too much time in a lab and not enough time actually climbing rock...
