After being around for awhile one tends to realize people actually assemble
several lives in parallel universes, if you get what I mean. And each of those
lives tend to be constructed with the same care.

Quite inspiring.

One can't expect success as the work required is very large.

But it's the trying that is important.

Thanks, especially to Jaybro, for fine portraits with various and, yes even quizzical, Ed looks.

In his own word, just yesterday:

at the start of my career as a physicist I was fortunate to meet an unbelievable number of the then still alive "physics gods" from history. They had made the wonderful, innovative, profound leaps in our understanding of the world.

I learned, however, that they were all different people, some warm and generous, others nasty SOBs who seemed to enjoy making other people fail, and everything in between. The lesson was that just because you are capable of great intellectual feats doesn't mean you're going to be a "good person."

You [Ray-J] have made contributions to climbing and this community, creative and innovative and climbers know you for that... you'll always be a bit crusty and cranky... but you have also given, in a very deep way, to the community.

I send those words back at'cha, Ed. Reading your posts here, you were one of the Tacoans (a tribe from Mars?) I became most curious to meet. And I was delighted to find, in person, a guy who on many levels was plain fun to hang out with.

Here's looking forward to spending more, uh...obscure, more off-width and off kilter, time with you, Sir.

Ed's the Real Deal.

When I finally met up with him in Josh last April, I discovered a guy who appeared to be exactly like how he posts: remarkably intelligent yet down-to-earth, passionate about climbing and photography, considerate of everyone and everything, filled with insight, humor, and a wonderful sense of whimsey. (He tells hella good stories.)

Just spending the day in his easy company was a gift.

That he banged his ankle on an off-width and AI green blood oozed out only made him that much more fascinating by my standards...;-)

wow! thanks everyone for the kind words.... I've been a bit down lately trying to overcome my back problem (today is the first day since July 30th that I didn't have any Ibuproen). Aside from the Vedauwoo trip I haven't been climbing...

and while I can climb, I just couldn't tie my shoes easily... to bendy for my back...

so I have been working with Deb on the bathroom remodel and trying to figure out how to make the recovery go a bit faster... mostly to no avail... but it is getting better

and your words of support help a great deal

at some point in my life it will become more and more difficult to actually climb, at any level... so I'm savoring the now as I will probably get it back together soon and start up again

hope to see you on the rock
and maybe at the Face Lift

I appreciate your friendship!

What Ed Hartouni means to me: An incredible gentleman that was one of a handful of people that helped lynnies transition from regular life to Super Topo Living. Before I entered this surrealistic sphere of higher intelligence I had never even emailed... much less posted on a WHAT chat room. Is this really a chat room? Nah, I know most of yo now in the flesh. It's friends talking, sharing and caring ....even Wes who tries to be tough.

BUT I never would have made it in Taco Life if a certain handful had not recognized a person suffering tremendous loss and reached out to yo here. Ed Being a major one helping out. Took time to email explaining things and listening and then offering the best advice.

Ed, lynnie be blessed with your friendship. Thanks for listening to my crazy family stories and thanks for your friendship and encouragement along the life path. I am growing and living again and I am stronger....thanks to Dudes like yo who Care. Peace and Joy always to you mi mano. Lynne

I too appreciate all the effort that Ed put into research, writing and hand holding on my own difficult personal issues. Without his many letters to colleagues in Geneva, we would never have seen even half of the wonderful contributions posted on the Frank Sacherer thread. A lot went on behind the scenes too and he was always there with a sympathetic understanding and calm advice. He's one of the people I most look forward to meeting next year in the Valley.

Meanwhile I can definitely appreciate the back problems and getting older. At a certain age we don't need physics theory any more to tell us about gravity, we take part in experimental work every day just getting out of bed!

Only good boulderers can walk.

After my last bouldering session a SWAT team had to put me in a frame and carry me to the hospital.

If there really is no vertebral damage after a fresh injury the lower back pain may be due to an attempt by the muscles to prevent damage. Whether this is the source for pain that lasts on for years I am not trained enough to know. Howsomever the stiffness Ed and Jan describe I have had for going on 30 years. During much of that time just lying recumbent involved pain. (Sleeping is actually quite hard on the back. I have read putting a pillow under the knees helps.)

One strategy is to do some LIGHT stretching before trying to get up. Knees to the chin kind of stuff. Remember however, stretching too severely can do damage. Be very careful while trying to touch your toes.

My first bout of pulling a stick through the sand at the beach several years ago largely cured the problem as long as I avoided impact. My current bout of pulling has already got me to the point where just lying down no longer hurts. But I posted on that already.

Ed is in a phase right now that no one else has ever suffered through.

He wants to be 18 again.

The way to get out of that phase is to remember vividly all the bad things associated with being 18.

Fixes the problem in a big hurry.

When first introduced to climbing it was the chemicals that it put into the bloodstream that made it so mind-bendingly great. But the people involved in it were, for some crazy reason, just the kind of folk that it was good to have around. Ed reminds me of those good old days.

Many thanks to Jaybro for such a fine profile.

Ed visited Vancouver early this year and thanks to Mighty Hiker, I got to meet him.

He showed excellent thin crack skills on this Squamish testpiece.

His contributions here have taught me a lot. I especially appreciate his "workflow" list for image processing.

It is true, though, that he remains mysterious.

But I tend to forget those virtues in the face of the person that Ed is. So Real and Honest. There's a Light in his eyes that celebrates his soul.

Not to mention the extremely high quality of his contributions to Supertopo, which are nearly unrivaled in documenting rare adventures and lending expertise from his special insights from science.

All this from a man not clambering for recognition or praise.

A true credit to the climbing community.

A nice antidote to the dopey illiterate non-OW-phile folks in the climbing community, Ed is someone I might support for public office.

'Sides, somebody's got to make sense of the physical world.

Cheers to the good Dr!

Seems like Ed is looking more and more like that other physicist with time.

Come on up to the Trench and talk to us about the universe sometime Ed. We'll do some climbing too with my fellow Trenchmen.
