I really dig the picture of Jules Eichorn. Timeless, no clues to the epoch; the caption says 1998, but the scene could have been set in California, 1928.
Also like the ready for action photo of DR.

You can just feel backstory oozing out of each of these photos.
I went along with Jim for the shot of Jules Eichorn. His wife in the background proceeded to hit on both of us.
In my portrait, can you see fear in my eyes? It's halfway up a FA we did together on Temple Crag, Backside of Beyond. The Celestial Aretes were all iced up that October, so we went over Contact Pass to the SE face. Wandered back and forth before choosing a line and roping up after noon.
This was starting pitch 3, steep thin face right off the ledge, and uncertain when pro would show up. A suck-it-up committed kind of lead and it scared me enough to get the full ambiguity rating: 5.9+.
I led the last pitch with light snow falling out of the mist and moonlight beginning to ghost the whole scene.
Nearby the start were 3 shiny new bolts starting up a difficult pitch. Does the line continue? Nothing's been reported...

Here's a shot showing Thomas Hornbein's face, as requested.
A lot of these are old scans of negatives. Everything will be reprinted from new scans when the book is published. Speaking of, I better quit giving peeks or nobody's going to buy the damned thing...

I've been working on it for about 11 years. I shoot on film in various formats, 35mm, medium format, 4x5.
