Thanks, all.

Here's two more from my series before I go to bed. I know I'm off subject now, regarding Sierra climbers, but oh well....

Jim Whittaker and Thomas Hornbein were both on the 1963 American Everest Expedition. As most everyone on this forum knows, Whittaker was the first American to summit Everest, and Hornbein, along with Willi Unsoeld, did the first ascent of the much more difficult West Ridge. Hornbein is seen here wearing one of the original oxygen masks from the '63 expedition, which he designed.

Thomas Hornbein, Bellevue, WA, 2002

What great shots Jim!!

Hornbein's daughter was my doc in Alaska.

One time I told her, "Because of a book in my high school library, it's your dad's fault that I've spent a lifetime thrashing around in the mountains!"
She replied, "Uh, I don't think he wants to take responsibility for that...."

It was a funny exchange.

You can just feel backstory oozing out of each of these photos.

I went along with Jim for the shot of Jules Eichorn. His wife in the background proceeded to hit on both of us.

In my portrait, can you see fear in my eyes? It's halfway up a FA we did together on Temple Crag, Backside of Beyond. The Celestial Aretes were all iced up that October, so we went over Contact Pass to the SE face. Wandered back and forth before choosing a line and roping up after noon.

This was starting pitch 3, steep thin face right off the ledge, and uncertain when pro would show up. A suck-it-up committed kind of lead and it scared me enough to get the full ambiguity rating: 5.9+.

I led the last pitch with light snow falling out of the mist and moonlight beginning to ghost the whole scene.

Nearby the start were 3 shiny new bolts starting up a difficult pitch. Does the line continue? Nothing's been reported...

Peter is right, I photographed Cassin in July while in Italy.

From the road Riccardo lived on, his son pointed out the backside of the Jungfrau... you could just make it out on the horizon.
And of course, the Grigna, where Riccardo started climbing in the '20s, loomed large right behind his house.
Also, turns out, Riccardo was quite the hunter of chamoix. He had the mounted heads of what seemed like 50 of them on his living room wall.

There's no doubt he was fading when I met him, and I believe he knew it. But so much dignity and strength in his eyes, still.

He died less than two weeks after I left.

My photo of Cassin will be in the next Alpinist.

Wow, thank you Steve for bringing this wonderful work back on the radar!

I just have fallen in love with these photos. There is so much storytelling in these faces. Even if one has no clue about climbing, each image speaks volumes. Highly evocative!

I really appreciate your talents, but also appreciate the great amount of effort and hard work that goes into creating each one. We are all the better for it.

When the book becomes available, I will certainly purchase a copy.

I found Jim's Tumblr page as well:

http://jimherrington.tumblr.com/

He had a broad body of excellent work in many areas. Especially like the musician photos. There is a great one of Keith Richards and the late, great Levon Helm on the second page (currently).

Wow!

So many stories, so little time.
If photos could speak, they would not make rhyme.

Rhyme is a means for enhancing memory, and so are photos.

But just a single, well-crafted photo is often the memory itself.

You do the best that you can over a lifetime of laboring over your favorite activity
and some person with a camera is almost sure to come around.
