Peter,

This story is from the first time I did this b/c skating thing, trans sierra from Badger Pass to Mammoth Mt.

Well thought out, tele turns, with deep knee technique work, okay with skate ski gear. I 've seen it it and can kinda fake it it.
It's a different medium, I have only run a handful of dirt and pavement marathons in under 4 hrs. I've done at least 6 skate ski 30 k's in under 2:30.

Boy oh boy, Peter -- hot job! You pulled off yet another one. There are only half a dozen people in the Sierra doing this kind of stuff, spread thinly over a lot of years and places and you have made some of the longest runs of all.
You went in 8 hours after I came off a mammoth tour of my own -- though heavier -- so I can totally relate to the snow conditions. It's been flat out hot back there for two weeks. (That's why I missed your call.) The afternoon before, three of us skied off University Peak in thick, deep mashed potatoes. Full avy precautions, and one of my partners set off a 2' deep wet slab, though it stopped itself.
I'm going to pull together a TR, but it will take a couple of days. I really like that this Taco stand is broad-minded enough, full-tilt mountaineering in all modes enough, to tolerate and even encourage tales of BC skiing.
Sneak Preview: 10-day FA (or whatever you'd call it for a ski mountaineering traverse) of a new variation on the Sierra High Route. Followed the classic Beck route W --> E as far as Milestone Mtn. Then stayed high, threading the Kings Kern Divide over and around 8 more peaks until the Divide butts up against the Sierra Crest at Junction Peak. Throw in skiing over University Peak cuz it's on the way to the roadhead.
Roughly 2x the classic High Route in length, vertical, time, steepness, commitment. Named it the Otto Route in honor of Otto Steiner, who was the first to ski High Route terrain out of Giant Forest toward Whitney and the Kern River on classic wooden nordic skis in the 20s and 30s.

Schedule changes on the ski trip ate my Dead show. Tory stayed home to work so he skipped the ski tour; just as well since it was so physically hard. But I didn't download the Tix to him in time, so they went up in smoke (as it were). Oh well...

Peter, A few days ago I read this and since my mind is blazing. I am recalling ski trips I took and dreaming of trips I did not take. I'm dreaming of corn and narrow chutes. Well done. And the pics added a lot to boot.

Thanks for recycling this, fun to read it again for me, missed out on last spring skating when I tore my Acl at the start of a backcountry tour with my son, but its come back strong, and I hope to do some good adventures next spring!
