Peter, wonderful story that shares many of my outdoor inspirations. Now, that picture in Walleye's post is a real flashback to the paleolycra era. We have had a solid week of blue wax kicking in Bellingham, with a bit more skiing maybe I will be in shape for a Cali race trip in the spring. Thanks for the post and have a good winter.

Thanks everyone!

Chiloe, I have really enjoyed skiing in NH. Some of the most classic trails. I did get hypothermia once when I bonked in the Bretton Woods Marathon 4 degree air temp with howling winds.. 6 lap race on ice you could see the grass through...

In New England, the resorts call that "packed powder."

'Colorful story with a lot of elements.
Not the least of which is how easy it would be to snap one of those racing skis...
The distance covered, plus time factor and solo.

Out of all of that what sticks in my head the most is an intense passage jam packed with incredible beauty.

Timid Top Rope (aka friend Andy) I have to disagree, though I am sure scarfing a bunch of rich food could induce hurling at times, on any thing longer than about 6 hours fat and protein is vital. If you are taking it in small amounts throughout the effort you don't get sick and you don't bonk. On subsequent and similar adventures I take salmon meat, nuts, dried fruit and cheese. I like the salmon, feeling that I am fueling my uphill efforts with the flesh of a being that evolved to powerfully swim up stream high into the Sierra. I eat it and extend that effort sliding up and over the frozen headwaters of the same rivers.

Hows the snow around Lassen now? I will be up there for a couple of weeks in January.

Peter

ps. Thanks Tarbuster/Roy, and a Merry Xmas to you and yours!

Great story....Your story motivated me last year to go from Mammoth to Yosemite in a push on track skis. WE HAD A NIGHTMARE. great time but no go on the push we got stoped near Lyell and the headwaters of the merced from Ice, had to turn around and bail toward June Lake then we got stuck on the slopes just above june lake from ice and spent a cold night out waiting for the sun to rise and soften the snow to decend.
Good time but cold.

Peter the valley is filling in the chutes should be good soon.

Thanks, Peter - sounds like a good adventure. Was there any moonlight? A magical thing to ski beneath.

Thanks RJ,

Did we even have cell phones in 1996?

One thing they did have back then that was totally cool was American Airlines Eagle service from Mammoth to South Lake Tahoe, to SFO. That morning after a hearty breakfast with John Moynier, I hopped on a plane, enjoyed a glorious view of the Sierra and jetted home to the Bay.

Nordic skiing has been stellar this week, yesterday 5 degrees in the morning, and perfect tracks for classic, on a 7 foot base!

RJ I will be in mammoth teaching and racing December 11-12th. Maybe catch you then.

yeah, this tr doesn't get the attention it ought to, presumably cuz of the lack of pix.

also, i guess, a lot of folks don't quite grasp what a push this represents.

peter, was this the 1st single-push crossing on that kind of gear? i don't know of an earlier one.
