Great pic of the Breithorn! Looks HOT that day. The day I went up it we had a total whiteout and didn't get any kind of view from the top. Got any pics of Lyskamm?

I wonder how much it's going to cost to stay there now. I kinda liked the rustic feel of the old hut though it was a bit too crowded for my taste. I was planning on doing Castor and Pullox in a day but ended up just doing briethorn and heading down due to winds. They closed the ski lifts going to Kleine matterhorn.

Edit: I had a falling out with one of the Binner's over that one. It's a long story and it was pretty damn scary rapping off the cable car and a long walk back to town.

My apologies to jbar, on looking again I see that I misidentified this mountain as
the Breithorn, above (now corrected). So my photo of the Mte Rosa hut upthread
does have Lyskamm in the background. I didn't yet scan my slides of the Breithorn,

Chiloe OMFG that pic of the glacier with the medial moraines shows MAJOR reduction -
the exposed rock at the side is FRESH.

Tami, somewhere I've got books with drawings of Alpine glaciers during their more
aggressive advance in the Little Ice Age. They overran farms, and earned distrust of
the valley folks; by the 1960s many glaciers had backed off quite a bit.

Lately, greenhouse warming has kicked the retreat into high gear. Somebody got comparable
pics of the hut and its glaciers in summertime today?

I dunno, think the Edge needs its own thread?

I suppose that is Lyskamm since it's right behind the hut. The Breithorn is right next to kleine matterhorn and drops into the valley on the N side. Sure does look like the cap on it though. Hmmm, now that I think of it I remember breithorn being a steep snow and ice slope. I think the pic you have is Castor. Hard to say since most of what I saw was through clouds.

Edit: I think you're definitely right on that being Lyskamm since it's directly behind the hut

In an Ice Age vein, I just learned this weekend (see Non-Climbing Weekend TRs thread)
that a mere 10,000-some years back, the towering front edge of the Laurentide ice sheet
confronted the Atlantic Ocean right about where my front yard is.

There's not much to look at today, but it made a cool mental picture.

To fill out the picture of mountains around the Mte Rosa hut, on one bluebird day in 1968....

Breithorn, as seen from the hut,

or a better Breithorn view, on the hike in.

No, I'm getting things figured out now. Lyskamm and Breithorn slides are correctly
identified upthread. I do have a shot of Castor & Pollux somewhere as well.

The 60s-era guidebook I was using had a nice description of Lyskamm as "a superb
snow mountain, Himalayan in aspect." Looking up at it from the hut, I could see why
they wrote that.
