John Lewis is a smart man and he knew what he was talking about.

Rep. John Lewis Responds to Increasing Hostility of McCain-Palin Campaign
10/11/2008
"As one who was a victim of violence and hate during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, I am deeply disturbed by the negative tone of the McCain-Palin campaign. What I am seeing today reminds me too much of another destructive period in American history. Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse.
"During another period, in the not too distant past, there was a governor of the state of Alabama named George Wallace who also became a presidential candidate. George Wallace never threw a bomb. He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who only desired to exercise their constitutional rights. Because of this atmosphere of hate, four little girls were killed one Sunday morning when a church was bombed in Birmingham, Alabama.
"As public figures with the power to influence and persuade, Sen. McCain and Governor Palin are playing with fire, and if they are not careful, that fire will consume us all. They are playing a very dangerous game that disregards the value of the political process and cheapens our entire democracy. We can do better. The American people deserve better."

Comparing McCain to Wallace is the single most rediculous thing I have ever seen on this forum.
Get a clue.

Both Wallace and McCain/Palin sought to gain votes through race-baiting and feeding people's hatred. McCain/Plain are just more subtle in how they do it.
If McCain doesn't like his resemblance to Wallace, he should stop immitating him.

I'm concerned DJ has regressed. Was he mouthing talking points just to get elected chief of the you-know-whats?
I was almost convinced as his arguments were better and more rationally stated than many I read. Now I don't know who to believe.
Obama conspiracy theory, assassination tin foil hat. Next thing you know, He'll tell us Obama is a Christian citizen and fathered two black children in wedlock.
Does a bear run the Catholic church (where's Ouch?)

dirt: thanks for the link to the same article that started the thread, but that wasn't what my point was about.
khanom: please provide names and statements by "numerous people" who are on the record that they heard the comment.
From timesleader.com, dated Oct 17: Agent Bill Slavoski said he was in the audience, along with an undisclosed number of additional secret service agents and other law enforcement officers and not one heard the comment.
“I was baffled,” he said after reading the report in Wednesday’s Times-Tribune.
He said the agency conducted an investigation Wednesday, after seeing the story, and could not find one person to corroborate the allegation other than Singleton (the author of the original story).
Slavoski said more than 20 non-security agents were interviewed Wednesday, from news media to ordinary citizens in attendance at the rally for the Republican vice presidential candidate held at the Riverfront Sports Complex. He said Singleton was the only one to say he heard someone yell “kill him.”
“We have yet to find someone to back up the story,” Slavoski said. “We had people all over and we have yet to find anyone who said they heard it.”
Left-leaning Salon.com also says "its a good bet it didn't happen" (view)

Graniteclimber,
I am surprised that you are persuing this line of argument even further.
Without getting into who I am voting for in this election, which is my private business, I still have to say that comparing McCain to George Wllace in just unbelieveable.
Were you alive when Wallace was active?
A couple of nice quotes:
"In the name of the greatest people that have ever trod this earth, I draw the line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the feet of tyranny, and I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever"
"The President (JFK) wants us to surrender this state to Martin Luther King and his group of pro-Communists who have instituted these demonstrations."
As Governor he defied the sitting President and stood on the steps of the U of Alabama blocking access to black students until he was forced aside by the National Guard.
No disrespect to Senator Obama but I see his campaign and his supporters play the race card a whole lot more than the McCain camp.
Sadly, there are deranged and sorry excusues for people out there who will yell out garbage meant to be hurtful. McCain has no part in it that I can see. Why not keep the election debate on the issues?

"Why not keep the election debate on the issues?"
That is what John Lewis and a lot of other reasonable people (including a lot of conservatives) said. Why didn't McCain stick to the issues instead of pursuing the politics of hatred and division?
Watch Colin Powell's endorsement of Obama on youtube. Read Christopher Buckley's explanation of why he is voting for Obama. They both say the same thing.
"No disrespect to Senator Obama but I see his campaign and his supporters play the race card a whole lot more than the McCain camp."
You have a very different view of this subject than most other Americans. And while you are entitled to your opinion, but you will forgive us if we see your moral outrage as entirely misplaced.
"Were you alive when Wallace was active?"
I know the history and so does John Lewis. He was there and he lived it. Also, he never said that McCain was the same as Wallace, just that he was going down a similar path that could lead to similar results. I agreed with him then and I still do.

I don't even know what to say about that part, other than:
Are you f*#king kidding me?!?!?!?!?
How could anyone possibly think that would work?

Every day, I get up and pray to Jah
And he decreases the number of clocks by exactly one
Everybody's comin' home for lunch these days
Last night there were skinheads on my lawn
Take the skinheads bowling
Take them bowling
Take the skinheads bowling
Take them bowling
Some people say that bowling alleys got big lanes
Some people say that bowling alleys all look the same
There's not a line that goes here that rhymes with anything
I has a dream last night, but I forget what it was
I had a dream last night about you, my friend
I had a dream--I wanted to sleep next to plastic
I had a dream--I wanted to lick your knees
I had a dream--it was about nothing
