I love to eat fruitcake! It's a constitutional right of every American to be able to freely bear (bare?) fruitcake as well as to organize local fruitcakes to defend against tyranny of Betty Crocker.

REI in sac had a single OZ in stock last week when I was there. Then a guy tried to tell me the hotwire was the same thing essentially. When I informed him I have over 150 hotwires he backed off and walked away. I love know-it-all's. There is a good possibility they are sold out though.

REI = Big Box corporatization. Just say 'no'.
Buy from local outdoor retailers.

anybody know what REI execs get paid? What ever, they sure have taken a good organization down. Berkeley store has more floor space for socks than climbing gear. And that complaint is coming from a second generation member. My dad's membership # was in the 4 digits. Used to be the place to go for exotic climbing gear. Now you can get a black diamond raven ice ax in any of 10 different lengths. But that's about it. Unless you are into tank tops.

My membership # (from 1970) is 3 digits short of that of that of my ss#; gotta say the Bezerkeley store now sucks bald dog! Didn't used to. They are still the masters of merchandising for impulse purchasing, esp, near the front of the store, must have come from assimilating early winters™....

Was a time when the people that worked in REI actually practiced the sport/activity they were selling the gear for. Luckily the bike guy at my local still rides but the only climber they had is long gone. "Whats an ice screw?"
They have every new climber wearing shoes so tight their toes are permanently crimped.
I do have a nifty thing going where I buy a jacket and wear it for a year then return it and buy another one for around the same price and I got an awesome pair of msr snow shoes for $30 cuz nobody here knows what they are for. Problem is it's gonna start costing me to fly with them. While we're bailing out the mortgage companies how about giving some dough to the airlines?

No, but it answers the question rockermike posed about how much the execs made.

Norbert got old and sold out... The Chalet is now a public company. Their dive shop is still descent but their mountain shop/ climbing is very disappointing.
A16 and Nomads is still under private ownership.
